Mine from Mr Fothergills were normal too. I grew the whole 'sun' range of cherry types this year and they've all done well. Best flavoured are Sunpeach, Suncherry Premium and Suncherry Smile - all sweet but not overly so and packed with 'proper' tomato flavour.
I also grew Gardener's Ecstasy from Realseeds - and my delight did indeed turn to ecstasy when I tasted the first one - a definite improvement on the old standard.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
Ooooh I like the idea of "Gardeners Ecstasy"!!!!!!!! I did have Gardeners Delight, unfortunately, cant remember whose seeds I used. Also Sweet Apertif, which always gives a huge crop, black opal, yellow plum and mini yellow plum, some heritage plants free from the James Wong collection, but OH didnt put the labels in with the plants! He isnt a lover of salad (nah, hes from Sarf London, HATES it) will eat the odd tomato, especially if it accompanies an English breakfast, so I tend to stick to the smaller varieties, so I can have my salad.
Now an interesting and strange thing happened last year with my tom plants....
GARDENERS DELIGHT GROWN FROM ORGANIC SEED BOUGHT ON EBAY TURNED OUT AS YELLOW PLUM TOMATOES, BUT I WOULD NORMALLY HAVE SAID DUMP THEM AS NOT KEEN ON PLUM TOMS NOR YELLOW FANCY COLOURS., BUT THEY WERE BLOODY DELICIOUS AND SO MANY OF THEM, PLANTS WERE LIKE TRIFFIDS.
So were those seeds actually organic? Or do they all come from the same supplier? Hmmm!!! Not good.
When I asked them on ebay if anyone else had got in touch about it, they said NO. But I wonder. I got a full refund as I complained about the others seeds, 11 packets in all, not many produced a crop at all, not even got through the seedling stage. No basil came up and other stuff was rubbish So disappointing.
But as these toms were such good plants I saved loads of seed and kept them in the fridge.
Hope they come out as the same yellows, but wouldn't it be OUTRAGEOUS if they reverted back to gardeners delight?
Strong healthy plants too. But that could also be cos I treated them with soluble aspirin as described in this interesting blog below from the American Rusted Gardener
I heard that others have had Yellow plums instead of gardeners delight, but today I thought I'd google it, and sure enough found this forum.
HAPPY TOMATO GROWING HA HA !!! WHATEVER THE COLOUR OR SHAPE
I'm so interested to find this thread. My non Gardener's Delight looking Gardener's Delight tomoatoes have been niggling me and decided to do some browing today. I purchased mine from the online store Dobies as grafted, small plants this year. As with all in this thread, the fruits grew as large, yellow, plum tomatoes and I had remembered GD as being the standard looking red type. They are delicious so not overly upset, but they have split, despite being fed and watered on a regular basis.
This is a very interesting thread. When you think how much the same all seeds of one plant group look it is perhaps a surprise that this does not happen more often. In many years of growing it has not happened to me much before. I did get a Kale plant out of a packet of cabbage seed just last year though. My GD are as expected (Marshalls seed) but interestingly my Sungold, normally yellow are coming out very orange this year.
I have to admit that when I first read the thread title, for a short moment I was thinking of extremely happy yellow gardeners. Time to get back to repotting my lillies.
The big question is which variety these yellow plum tomatoes are? They are up to 1.5 in long (35mm) sweet, meaty and delicious and prolific, It seems that many on the post seem to want to plant them again so an answer is required!
I have looked and there are a few contenders such as Peardrops, but these plants we have been sold as Gardeners Delight have grown as cordons and are not a bush tomato.
Any ideas out there? We are going to keep some of the seeds!
I bought a packet of Gardeners Delight seed from B&Q this year. They were there own make (Verve) and all 50 plants that I grew turned out top be yellow plum tomatoes. Not Gardeners Delight which I have previously grown for over 40 years.
It is my understanding that only a few of the bigger seed companies grow their own stock & that most simply repackage seed bought in from bulk growers. The fact that so many seem to have ended up with the same yellow plum toms instead of round red Gardeners delight would seem to bear this out. Perhaps some of you should write to the seed suppliers involved & ask if they know a) what happened b) what the variety is.
Ian350 it will be interesting to see what you get next time if they are an F1 hybrid you may not get what you expect next year as these plants don't come true from seed in the second generation. There is a mini plum yellow Santorange but this is F1. To paraphrase Peter Thoday from the Victorian garden series "many fruit & veg plants are like motor cars; we seem to get a bigger & better model every year" so the names of those sold this year may not still be around in a couple of years time.
I bought some grafted tomatoes from Suttons mail order who happen to be the same company as Dobbies. The one labled as Gardeners Delight have turned out to be yellow and plum shaped. There are absolutely loads of tomatoes which are sweet and really nice. Have googled but can't find the variety. Think I will email Suttons with a photo to see what they say they are. Clearly not what you would expect from Gardeners Delight.
