Yellow Gardeners Delight

  • I see from the Daily Telegraph Gardening section today that "People have struggled recently to get hold of traditional "Gardener's Delight.." There is obviously a major problem with one or more of the big seed producers, who are not supplying Gardener's Delight seed, but the seeds of a plum shaped yellow one instead. When I contacted Kings Seeds to say I was disappointed that their Gardener's Delight seed had not produced Gardener's Delight tomato, they replied very promptly to say they would investigate it & send me another packet for sowing next year. I have received this packet & see it was packed year end July 16, so is a different batch to the one I sowed this year. It will be interesting to see if the resulting plants are GD or not. The Telegraph recommends growing "Cherrola" as a replacement for GD. Has anyone grown it this year? And if so would they recommend it?

I grew Gardeners' Delight from seed and I've got one of those little yellow plum jobs in there.

Tasty though , so not complaining.

I have had the same issue in West Sussex! Two Gardeners Delight plants bought from different garden centre both turned out to be yellow plum tomatoes,  Very nice but defintely not Gardeners Delight.

This makes me wonder if all these seed companies and growers are using the same source. Seems most odd otherwise.

Interesting that we go to great lengths to source our seeds and get the best quality/value and so on and the suppliers are all selling the same old tatt presumably from the same 1/2cwt bag! image

That might be a topic for the Which Magazine to investigate.

  • Hello everyone

Come across this thread while searching for the same issue.  I have received Yellow Plum tomatoes instead of Gardeners Delight from Kinds Seeds. They confirm others have had the same problems but their supplier is denying there is a problem.

Has anyone worked out what variety has been substituted? We actually really enjoyed it and would like to grow it again.

Regarding a previous post regarding Cherrola. Yes, we grew it - performs very well lots of tomatoes 20+ per truss and very vigorous plants. Unfortunately taste is only average.

  • My Gardeners' Delight seeds from D T Brown turned out as expected!
