Yes Joyce21 - the river is around 100 yds from my house. Someone on the RSPB site suggests it's a young one, maybe out looking for it's own territory. Although it didn't fly off in the direction of the river. I was praying that no cats came round the corner whilst he/she was sat there. Which was for a good 15 minutes or so.
amy280 - was on my list too! There is an older chap who walks his dogs along the river daily and he is forever telling me he sees Kingfishers regularly. No mater how hard I look I have never been lucky in seeing them. In all honesty I thought he was fibbing! Another new visitor this year has been a Chiffchaff.
Joyce21 - I don't think I've seen herons along our (I don't mean mine personally) stretch of river it's possibly a bit too enclosed with trees etc for them to see their prey. Not that I know much.
Amy280 - I am embarrassed to say that I don't take advantage of the river since we lost our dog and rarely go along there now. This is one moment I will treasure. I've a work colleague who will also be extremely jealous when I show him my pictures.
Nice one Angi. There's one or two down at the river near my work but I'm never round that side now.
We occasionally get herons round here. We got them at my last house as we had a large pond with resident fish. They wade, so not an issue if the water's deep. They'll hang about the edges. I had a visiting pheasant when I lived round the corner and we'd just made a pond. She came round every day for a while. We have a N. Trust garden nearby so loads of wildlife there.
During a very wet spell a couple of years ago, I looked out the kitchen window and there was a pair of mallards on a garage roof nearby
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Fairygirl - I need to spend more time along the river to see just what I can spot. Thus far the pheasants don't venture into the garden. We've a wide variety of wildlife nearby - the area along our section has been labelled 'A site for natural conservation' - although quite what that means is anyone's guess!
Lovely to have that little visitor anyway. Hope you get lots more wildlife coming in.
The pheasants were quite bold at my last house. There was only a few houses nearby - minor B road. The chap across the road fed them and they nested in his garden. The females sometimes jumped up on the window ledges and pecked on the window

It's been an interesting day ... this morning I watched a pair of blue tits both together going into a nest box in the garden opposite. Don't know if they're prospecting for next year already or trying for yet another late brood 'cos it's still so mild
This afternoon the frogs in the pond were croaking quite loudly while I planted bulbs, and a black cap was singing in the ash tree - I'm sure it was a black cap - and then there was a commotion in the sky above me and I looked up to see a couple of rooks mobbing a buzzard!
I've heard a buzzard mewing overhead when I've been in the garden this year, but I've not seen it before. We're right on the edge of the city!
As we watched the rooks gave up and the buzzard flew off in the direction of the marshes.
It's been quite a day for wildlife

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
That was an eventful day for you Dove - we sometimes see buzzards circling above our home - usually just one or two - they are so majestic - luckily they are now breeding on the island.
Perhaps your blue tits are sizing up the nesting boxes for next year which has made me a little concerned as we took our boxes down last w/end, to clean and repair before re siting them for the next Spring. Do you know which way the holes should be facing? We have had only 3 out of 7 boxes used this year - they were facing various directions. I know that south is not good as it makes the box too hot when the sun is at it's fiercest.

Right place, right time is the main thing to be lucky in seeing them.

Thank you both for taking an interest.
Angi_ the river behind us has woods on either side but it's fairly wide.
One time the heron decided to come to the field across the road and stood for ages watching the traffic passing. . . .
Nice one Angi.

Now that is bold Fairygir. I've read that they are partial to a Fritillaria or 4. I hope they do discover the ones in my garden.
