That is one congested compost bin! I do miss having slow worms in the garden. I haven’t seen any since we moved here, although I did see two bodies on the road recently.
Do grass snakes eat slow worms by any chance?

Is that a shed skin of a dragonfly larva?
  • Today we had around 20 dragonflies hunting in our garden in the same area for nearly 30 minutes. They were so quick it was difficult to see exactly what they were but we decided that they were broad bodied chasers.
They stayed in the same area for so long we could see them catching small insects but none of them would land and then.....gone.
Wonderful to see so many for so long.
  • @Ergates yes, the photo's not very clear, but at the thorax there was a hole that it must've squeezed out of 😀
I love dragonflies, they're fascinating creatures.
@bertrand-mabel you're so lucky, many years ago we found a little lake in the algarve that was swarming with hundreds, lots of different colours flashing across the water. I was in raptures!

We thought our deer had gone. She appeared at the beginning of lockdown last year. She called for a mate in July and August last year and one didn't come, no sign of pregnancy or any babies this year. This year she got proactive, and was seen trotting off to a patch between the river and the railway sidings where deer are often seen.  We thought that would be it. Except something is scrumping my apples.  She's back. We also caught what I think is a bat , I slo mo'd it to 10% speed.  The cat is one that is trying to adopt us.

  • Just had a fabulous close sighting of a male juvenile green woodpecker from our kitchen window into the orchard. Obviously found some ants and was there for a long time. Moved off and then came back.
Very nicely marked and waiting to be an adult.

I saw my first grasshopper yesterday sitting on my fence.
