Found the following on top of the stairs newel post today and it was just crawling around on there. It was larger than I'd expect a wasp or bee to be. Does anyone know what it was? I managed to get it safely in the glass and let it outside but took a while for it to get in to a catchable position.
That looks like a queen wasp who's spent the winter hibernating in a cosy cranny in your house and is now looking for a suitable place to set up home ............. better outside than indoors!

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Yes, I agree with Dove, that is a wasp, that has probably overwintered in your house Lucid. Now that the weather is warming up it has awoken and it could be put outside.
While we've been outside mulching and digging, it's been lovely watching our bluetits busily popping in and out of the nest box and listening to the robin singing from the ash tree while the bees were buzzing in the pulmonarias. A really lovely day.

Thanks Dovefromabove and Guernsey Donkey 2. As long as it's not trying to make a nest in the loft I don't mind. Glad I got it outside without harming it anyway. It was just happily crawling around on the newel post for ages.

My first shield bug sighting of this year - on a pot right outside the doorstep. Hopefully the first of many such sightings.
Spotted this little beauty today. I think it is a scarlet tiger moth caterpillar.
Hi there, I really like this amazing pictures.
Cicindela Campestris or Green Tiger Beetle, see yesterday, but not in our garden. I have never seen one before, has anyone else?
Oooh, what a beautiful colour.
