Have the bats been there long @Lyn , meaning years, or is this new. Might they move after using your loft as a brood den, then go on to their winter roost?
@purplerallim Sorry, I forgot about this thread. the bats have been here for as long as I can remember, my parents had the bungalow before us, they bought it in 1987, and the bats still come. At one time a company refused to put extra insulation there because of them, a different company said it would be ok, it was, they’re still here. We sweep up from time to time just to see if they’re back, they always are.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
I have a friend with a super duper bat detector that tells you the actual species. We had a walk round the other night, 3 natterers, 13 Leisler, 8 noctules, 40 pipistrelles and 3 brown long eared. One of the brown long eared was outside my front door. Noctules on the back lawn, pipistrelles by the oak tree.
The chap leading our bat walk last month had a little dongle on an iPad which showed which species were around. It displayed and recorded the sound waveforms that were being received. Very neat bit of kit but I think it was about £300.
@WonkyWomble I've not seen the bats recently, but they were around during all that humid horrible heat we had here recently. They fly around in front of the windows quite visibly. Lovely. No idea which ones they are though. Too quick for me.
That sounds terrific @fidgetbones - I had no idea we had so many in such close proximity - or you do anyway
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
All the wee birds were having a feeding frenzy a couple of days ago. It was difficult to get photos because they were flying around so rapidly The coal tits have been busy hiding the sunflower hearts again too, which is great fun to watch
"You get the food" "No - you get it"
Nice to see a couple of young chaffies in too. They were both tootling around quite happily getting food and watching the dunnocks psyching each other out
