I looked up yesterday just in time to see a huge orangey bumble bee tap the window. I hope he found some food, there's nowt in my garden at the moment really.

Same here and the smaller bees were out too. It was warm enough for the crocus to open so they were all busy with those. I had my lunch outside today, sitting by the crocus with the bees buzzing. Unheard of in February here!

Lovely to have the pipits near you @scroggin, and the stonechats. We don't get the latter here - have to head further north. The pipits are a little higher than where I live too. Jealous of your yellowhammer too  :)

I had to laugh earlier today when I was at the kitchen sink. The pair of daft wood pigeons were sitting on the lamppost near the back gate. One had a bit of dead grass or similar in it's beak. They sat for a while, then the silly clown dropped it. Both of them kept looking down as if they were hoping it would magically reappear in their beak. I don't know why they keep trying to nest in that conifer - or any conifer really, but that's what they like. Utterly useless place for a nest, and I've yet to see any of them succeed  :D
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • We were at the far end of the garden when we heard a commotion,  thought it was fighting blackbirds so thought nothing of it. Today went around the side of the house to find a big pile of black feathers, the Sparrowhawk has been at it again. Won't know if it's my pet blackbird until I feed tomorrow,  he usually comes to eat while I'm still putting food out.🤞

Case in point; felt like spring yesterday, heavy snow shower this morning. Queue of sheepish sparrows by the bird table remembering their priorities.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Heavy frosts for us the last few days @wild edges, so the nice temps in the sun are a con. Still far too early to assume anything eh?  ;)
The sparrows are always in and out as they can access the cage feeders, and the male blackbird's always hanging around for his breakfast. He's one half of the current 'pair'.
Today is weird - frosty but then cloudy, but still below zero now. The same yesterday.  I hope it clears today too, as it turned out to be pleasant. Nice to get some dry weather.
Those daft pigeons will no doubt be carrying on with their hopeful nest building....

  • Yes it's quite funny isn't it @Fairygirl 😁 I have a pet collared dove too, who will feed while I'm still there a hands width away. My sad is all the Robins I have cultivated over the years, with last years eating from my hand, but they never last more than two years and this years one is shy.☹️

First clump of frogspawn seen in our pond this morning seems early for the North East.
  • Found 3 of these in the house:

It's surrounded by bits of dust to give it some scale.
Baby grasshoppers. The parent must have laid eggs in my propagator or some compost and i've brought it indoors where they've hatched in the warmth.
