I see them doing it all the time here @wild edges. I was wondering what they're eating, but I presume it's small insects.
I've not noticed the sparrows getting in there though - they spend most of their time fannying around in the adjacent blackthorn hedge  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

They seem to be going deep into the flowers rather than pecking at insects so I'm guessing they're after the nectar. A small sugar rush while waiting for a turn on the feeders maybe. I might grab a hand lens tomorrow and go and see if there are any insects about in there though just to rule that out.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Yes - I couldn't quite work out what they were getting @wild edges
I even see them in very cold spells so I reckoned it wasn't insects, but the nectar makes sense. I have several feeders so they never really have to worry about the food supply, but maybe they just fancy some pudding  ;)

It's fairly common bird behaviour in South and Central America. The tits seem to like Fritillaria imperiali too.

I had to smile today, looking out of the window I saw a goldfinch sitting on a metal poppy seed head, pecking it and looking for food. It too must have been waiting its turn on the feeders.

This is a large ex-bee. I think likely a buff tailed queen. Do you think?

  • Oh dear, one of the pair of collared doves which have been coming to my feeder each day, has disappeared. Is she sitting on eggs, a bit early, or has she met her demise? The partner is still coming but looks a bit lost.
A wonderful new visitor is a beautiful male bullfinch, in full male plumage. I don't see them very often in my garden. he is so colourful, lovely.

She might be sitting/laying @Joyce Goldenlily as I have wood pigeons taking twigs into the bush opposite my house.
Did the birdwatch this weekend, very windy so down on numbers.
Missing were the Starlings and Wren, down in numbers were the Dunnock, and Sparrows.
