A female sparrowhawk has just got itself into a right old fankle in the twisted hazel just outside the window. I saw an explosion of feathers and a small bird flew off but the sparrowhawk was stuck for a minute or so in the tangled stems. One wing was outstretched and the other closed. I thought I might have to give a hand but it managed it eventually.
I've just spent a lovely couple of hours going through my photographs and seeing as we were speaking about sparrowhawks I thought you might like to see a pic of this handsome chap who used to visit the garden often, unfortunately.
My favourite wild creature is the red squirrel and they used to be daily visitors to our garden consequently I have very many photographs of them. It was common to see half a dozen at any one time despite them not liking each other and they would fight quite viciously. We moved over the hill when it became clear that we wouldn't be able to maintain the garden and oddly there weren't as many reds over here. However, since the spruce and larch have been extracted from the wood at the side of me I haven't seen a single red squirrel. There have been about 4 or 5 grey ones but that's all thank goodness. The pictures below were taken at our old house.
