Heard the first cuckoo of the year this morning. Haven't heard them for a couple of years in our locality. A pleasant surprise on a lovely spring morning 😊
'Tis the season. Fish & Game begs people to take in their bird feeders by April 1st but many people just won't, and the bears pay for it. Their sense of smell is incredible and once they find a food source they keep coming back, which often means they have to be relocated or worse, euthanized because they've become a nuisance. Last year my mother and I were going 'round and 'round about her feeders. She wanted to leave them up throughout the spring to attract migrating bird species we wouldn't normally see, I wanted them gone because I don't want a hungry black bear anywhere near my mules. After the neighborhood bear bent her shepherd's crook twice, broke open her metal bird seed pail and ate every last bit, and destroyed a couple of bird feeders and suet holders, she finally stopped feeding the birds. I don't mind that she feeds them over winter, but once bears are up and about, better safe than sorry! I've chased away my fair share and luckily haven't had any turn on me. I kind of like the idea of having a bear feeder in the garden. I imagine the reality is less appealing though
I've walked up on them while walking in the woods or even on the road. Seeing one close up will stop your heart for an instant, that's for sure! Luckily we're in a fairly rural area and most of the wildlife still has a healthy fear of people. These tracks are from the bear who kept raiding my mother's feeders.

Thankfully my wildlife is a little less dangerous unless you are a plant. She is loosing her winter fur coat and I think she is pregnant. If so then we might have the patter of tiny hooves next month.
The old dog fox has been enjoying a bit of peace this week in one of his favourite spots.
In the 1970's the village I used to live in had a bear park nearby (Loch Lomond Bear Park). The bears soon discovered that some trees overhung the perimeter fence and figured out how to escape. One day I was walking through the village and passed by a garden behind a restaurant which I knew had a Newfoundland dog as a pet. I looked over and thought "that dog is getting a bit big" before realising it was an escaped bear!
No bears around here that I know of but plenty of deer. Here are some old photos of fawns in our garden, looking forward to seeing more soon.
