Thry are such beautiful creatures. Unfortunately I have found two squashed hedgehogs on the roads around us and a distinct lack of our two visitors :(1

    Hello Mark,

I'm glad I caught your above post re fruit and hedgehogs.

It's only recently ( the last couple of months ) that I have been putting out food for the 2 or 3 Hhogs which suddenly came into my garden.  I became aware that they were visiting when I kept seeing faeces around the bird feeder areas.

I made up my own recipe but followed recommendations.  I used chopped peanuts, sunflower hearts, dried mealworms AND sultanas.  Now horrified to see what you are saying about the use of fruit.  Not horrified with you I hasten to add.......you are obviously on the sticky end of things so to speak.

However, I've just checked in C J Wildlife's catalogue ( which was one of the "diets" I looked up before I started feeding.

I quote below what the offer as "Hedgehog Food..........

"Similar to a HHog's natural diet, this recipe has been trialed by the British Hhog Preservation Soc and includes kibbled pnuts., sunflower hearts, dried mealworms, oats, suet, sultanas and dried blackberries. As the food contains dried ingredients, be sure to put out fresh water as well "

The 2nd item  in the same catalogue is classed as a Hedgehog Delicacy ......too long to quote but does include raisins.

Strikes me as a case of crossed wires somewhere along the line and quite worrying if we ( the general public ) are doing wrong whilst trying to do right.

I correspond with someone in Jersey who has been involved with Hedgehog preservation for a number of years and will be asking her about this.

Sorry for the length of the post but I'll be pleased to know your response.

I'm knocking the sultanas on the head as from now.......I'll get thru them myself I suppose - eventuallyimage

    See original post

     Hi Philippa,

It's something I've read frequently with sultanas and other sugar heavy food, another one has come up today on the rescue's Facebook page - feel free to comment and ask Gill who runs the page with years and years of experience.

The post is the first one at the top - https://www.facebook.com/Hedgehog.Bottom/

Lovely picture once again Joy, thank you for posting. Clarington I'm very sorry to hear that image do you have a 5" gap in the fence or a gate to welcome any in? If so, I would continue to put down food in a feeding station because you never know who may take up residence e.g. hoglets dispersing from their mothers for a new home.

I hope they re-appear for you GWRS, maybe they have moved spot or are nesting for babies. Everyone please put out shallow bowls of water for hedgehogs, birds, frogs and other wildlife. The serious heat has left them dehydrated.

I know what you mean GWRS, I love the sounds of Summer. Just had to rescue a hog from next door through the fence, it'd somehow managed to get it's head stuck in a crisp packet - heard it from my bedroom. Not the friendliest or most considerate neighbours but I threw over a handful of puppy biscuits for it and think I've done my back in the process. I believe some of the food may have landed in their paddling pool imageimage don't tell.
