seems to be a lot of hedgehog love here, which is great.
just found this little one outside in front of the door to chicken coop, drinking from a puddle of water.it's obviously very small so I have brought it inside and hoping to feed it up in the hope it may get back outside by December...(fingers crossed)..
yes after some advice, im sure keeping the wee thing inside would be best although I have read that they can hibernate as late as end of December. Will just see how it goes.
I second Tetley's post, it will have to be after the frosts and cold nights have ended in Spring, probably early April at earliest - you're doing a wonderful thing if your local rescue is also full.
yes we wlll definitely be keeping "Hamish" until springtime...there will be no problem I don't think in keeping him/her awake as he/she has been running around mad all evening and even now I can hear him/her Scurrying about.
even let me pick him/her up while I cleaned the floor without folding in on itself.
seems to be no tics etc on the wee thing and poo looks as good as I could see.
thanks for the info and i will try and give "Hamish a happy home for the winter"!
i knew the basics but thanks very much for your input . Was a bit shocked this morning to come across one so small.
seems fine and spritely and all is looking good at the minute....No smell at all...(maybe cos I have so many animals I don't notice) but i don't think so.
HH hasn't been eating that much. I don't know if HH is just nervous and frightened. I've put HH in new box. I can't let in run round in conservatory at night cause HH will set off the house alarm and I can't omit the conservatory zone.
I taped two boxes together so HH has a sleeping area and a feeding area, bit like a rabbit hutch. I am going to call the vets on Monday, he may need some injections for worms and parasite if HH is not putting on weight. My neighbour said I can use her cat carrier.
I bought some live mealworms today and cooked some mince beef. HH has eaten a little but not a lot. I don't know if I'm just worrying to much, cause I don't know how much they are suppose to eat when their that small.
I am looking on line at rabbit hutches, but there's nowhere in the house to put one .Only in the conservatory. Even though we have a small radiator in there it still get very cold. At what temperature should a room be to keep them warm and from hibernating? If I have to bring HH into the house I would have to put HH into something like a cat carrier and in my daughters room.I hate keeping HH in a confined space as their natural instinct is to forage all night.
My OH read online that your not suppose to talk to them cause it can stress them. Its so hard not to, cause HH is such a cutie.
I wanted to get HH a nice soft fleecy hat to keep nice and cosy when asleep just like they do with the pet one's in America, but obviously I had to restrained myself. HH is wild and he will go back to the wild. They don't get fleecy hats outdoors do they.
Hi Tetley, Thanks for that info. I will let H out to run around in conservatory when I get home from work, around 19.30 and just put H back when I go to bed. I Thought about getting one of those large plastic storage boxes but deep enough H can't climb out. They would be more hygienic and easier to clean. I could just put H sleeping box into the plastic box and lift that out withoI could then put some cardboard round the edges, like a babies cot bumper, so if H is awake all night H won't set off the alarm.
H does knock the water all over. Is it best to just keep putting news paper down in feeding area or get some sawdust?
Hi Tetley, I'm not bothered about the mess at all. I make more mess going in and out of the garden all the time. I also had a Rottweiler for twelve and half years. I took HH to the vets today HH was sick last night .HH brought up the mincemeat I gave him and some worms.
Vet gave HH an injection that would kill lungworm other worms and parasites. He also gave me some meds to give HH for the next 5 days.
fingers crossed the wee one is alright after seeing vet..
update on our wee hamish: he seems fit enough...(at the minute) and is eating nonstop and scurrying around. He's sleeping on/off during the day but up and about a few times for food and a wander around...(we can tell by his little presents he leaves us) When we check. Very active at night as he's quite near our bedroom......by the way no idea what sex hh is but I've named it hamish anyway!
