We'd expect them to hibernate late October-Mid November, but it depends on night time temperatures where you are. I had some out till December in SE last year as it was so unusually mild here. Best to keep food available until no one visits for more than a week or so. Hibernation sites are also different to summer nesting locations.

Hedgehogs still happily feeding here ( SW UK ) although the number of animals has reduced in the last couple of months.

Depends where you are located of course but I wouldn't think it is cold enough yet to drive them into hibernation

My wife has told me that in a recent TV programme she learned that their numbers have dropped by 90% since the Millennium.

This is 100% true and so sad isn't it? They need so much help, with so many different factors against them - destruction of land, lungworm, lack of ability to travel to neighbouring gardens, the highways etc.

Aldi have a couple of hedgehog homes on sale. But you'll have to be quick, as they went on sale on Sunday. They've sold out on-line.

Went into Aldi on the way home from golf this afternoon and bought this one. They were nearly out of stock.

Excellent value for £7.99 and very substantial. We will decide where to put it tomorrow.

Great value and a cracking deal! Apparently they are almost sold out over the entire country. One thing to bare in mind is that it will need to be undercover away from rain and winds, as it will penetrate the material. May also be a safe bet to pin it or weigh it down on the ground. I used hay to fill mine last year!

Runnybeak - I think you meant to post this in the other thread for Angie. It does indeed only apply for babies. We're seeing lots of autumn juveniles come in at the moment, a great worry every year with second litters arriving and the warming climate meaning they believe there's still enough time as it's similar to Spring.

image         image         image         image         image         image               image      These photos were taken last night. Hedgehogs are feeding every night in the feeding boxes and they have also found the 3 nesting/hibernation boxes, and have filled these with leaves and are using them.  The Hedgehogs didn't hibernate last year, so I fed them all through the winter as it was so mild in the south west.

Brilliant Joybell - you really are giving them 5 star accommodation and I love it!

It is not Cheerios, to much sugar and salt in them.

It is Morrisons Saver complete dog food in 3kg bags and they really like it. The food bowls are filled every night and water bowls are placed nearby.

They don't eat the food if it gets wet that's why I put it in boxes.

Going out to take some more photos if I can.

Thank you all for your kind words, this one is going under the plant stand for his food.

Put out another box for hibernating last week, so thought I would check it this morning, yes he/she is fast asleep.

1Runnybeak1.  The little doorway leads into a overgrown area of car park, which is very quiet.

They run in there if they need to.image
