    Thanks for enjoying this.

Over the  last couple of nights we have had a frost,  I keep putting out the food and it is still going.

Put food out tonight at 4.45 and first hh appeared within minutes.

i have 4 hh boxes for hibernating, but have counted 7 hh. do I need to put more out or will they hibernate together, they can hibernate under the summerhouse which is where some are now.

  • One of may HH  that I've been feeding looked under weight. So tonight when I got home, I got the weighing scales out, so when HH arrives I could weigh him/her. I went to unlock the conservatory door ready for Hoggys arrival and sure enough he was there.I picked him up and weighed him in some Tupperware on the scales. He only weighed 400g.I've brought him into  the conservatory   laid a box  on the floor and put some straw in it.I phoned a hoggy rescue, but the one I phoned said she was full, 'there was no room at the inn'. So she gave me two more numbers and my local vets. She said it was ok to keep him in conservatory over night and I 'll ring the others in the morning. She did say you are better using hay not straw which I can get from Wilko (MEADOW HAY) she said. I 'll be straight down to wilko in the morning. She asked if hoggy  either rolled up into the shape of a ball or the shape of a rugby ball. I said' into a rugby ball. Apparently this means they are likely to be  under weight. Just thought I'd mention that in case no one has scales and has  hoggys in their garden. Hoggy went straight in the box but it wasn't long before he/she came out to explore the conservatory. I switched the light off in the conservatory. He keeps coming up to the patio doors. I think he wants to come into the lounge and watch some tv.image Unfortunately we don't have spike tv channel.imageHere's some  pics

  • Hi Tetley, I'm in Nottingham. Your a bit to far away from me and we don't have a car. My neighbour opposite also has HHs  in her garden. We love them and get worried if we don't see them for a few nights. She has a car and said her OH would take hog to a rescue. I have a number for one in Brinsley and the other Prickley Ball Lodge in Derby. If there's no room at the Innes I'll have to keep him in the conservatory over winter. The lady I phoned tonight said hog may need to have some injections. One every day for three days, then ten day break and then one for three days again. In case of lung worm and parasites. If this is the case my neighbour opposite said she would go halves with me if it came to that.

I have three hog houses in the garden, one I made and two I got from Aldi.I will have a look if there occupied tomorrow as I know there's another small one. We had mum and to babies and two medium side in the summer.image

  • Thanks  Tetley, I'm not sure about the name Trump  though ,hoggy may be a she. I phoned Brinsley Rescue this morning. She is full and said the one at Derby is too. She did say that hoggys, even if they are a little under weight they do survive  and that its when you see them out during the day and they are wobbley  that they need help.I will keep him in conservatory until he puts on more weight. She said they only need worming if there's worms in their poo. I'll keep an eye out for it. He's tucked away in his box this morning I wrapped him in a towelling tea towel and he's taken it to the back of the box and is fast asleep. Didn't eat much last night but ate all his mealworms. I'm not going to give him to many  mealworms, its all protein. I've got some branded cat biscuits 2-12 months. I've just had a parcel delivered so I have another box.Its more square shape  and opens from the top so I'll cut a hole at the front and leave that one out as well. he can choose.

    Here's a few more pic'simage

  • imageOH dear, the shoes  are an old pear for the garden. Do you work at Clarks? or are you missing one. We did had a rescue just up the road put unfortunately he had to close. He gave half of his cages to the rescue at Oxton. My neighbour took four hoggys to him last year they had come from under her shed. They were no more than a.bout three weeks old they were out during the day and were very wobbley. His name I think is Clayton. If I had more  time a bigger garden and more room I would love to have a rescue.

They would have luxury accommodation. Hot water bottles heat pads etc.image Got my lotto ticket for tonight so fingers crossed.image

God bless you too Tetley image Your knowledge is also invaluable in a time of need! Joy - I would provide as many hibernating sites as possible, it's important to note that summer nesting locations are often different to those for the winter sleep. It's great yours are still feeding, they look very healthy indeed. Keep an eye for autumn juveniles, are all 7 adults?

Paula you are right, many many rescues are full to the brim with underweight hogs and autumn juveniles - all over the country. My local one is recommending people do home overwinter. Here's a link for further information - http://www.hedgehog-rescue.org.uk/overwinter.php Please ask us if you have any problems, just message any of us will help in any way we can. I think what you are doing is absolutely fantastic. Cat biscuits are the best - fatten him up as much as possible.

If everyone can keep feeding throughout the rest of autumn and incoming winter that would be great - often young ones wake up too early and in need of food. I'll be doing the same here.

I sure do wish more people cared like we all do here image

Afternoon Verd, their primary eating times are just after sunset and just before sunrise, so now the clocks have gone back and we're in November - pretty darn early image If you put out cheap cat biscuits they'll be round you in no time. Nothing greater than sitting in the garden during the middle of Summer and silently listening to the rustling as they approach. You can hear them eating mealworms a mile off!

Thank you mark56 for starting this thread I have learn't so much.

All 7 are now over 400g or what I call medium, not quite as large as the biggest ones. All this years hoglets have grown up. In Spring we have large, medium and small that way I know if I am counting different ones.

Put out 2 more hibernating boxes today in different parts of the garden half full of dry leaves, just to give them the idea, it's worked in the other 4 boxes within days. They just make there own round ball inside.

will keep putting out food and water every night, until it all slows down.

It's great  to hear that people are trying to help and do the best for our prickly friends.image
