GWRS. Putting them under cloches sounds like a good plan, I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and will be away for two weeks so want to plant out as much as I can.

The guy's on the neighbouring plots haven't planted out broad beans, both have had their plots for years...one side planted out spuds weeks ago and has earthed up, I noticed he's covered spud shoots with plastic pots..so covered mine this evening... image

Hi Garden Girl. Yes covering the ground and cutting a slit in to plant courgettes and melon should work too. if you only have to have 50% cultivated, you could strim and mow half of it to make a lawn, add some planters and a garden bench etc..!!!image

Spuds in bags in the polytunnel are now up and have  a crop of Mizzuma now. When the seedlings are up and planted out, I will get some more raised beds put in the PT to plant the tomatoes in. Allotment Association secretary,,told me where to get free pallet collars locally, where they are more than happy to give them away for free and they make great raised beds!image

Giniagibbs , pallett collars are brill , I have had some given to me , great for carrots and plants that want a bit of protection at the moment , I sometimes put fleece over the top with drawing pins, it doesn't last more than one season but it is the cheap stuff from Poundland

Not sure about Mizzuma will have to look it up image

Went to the plot for a few hours today done some more digging in between hail

Neighbour was at his plot today so managed to ask what he is doing with the plastic he used to cover up to stop weeds growing - to see if we could borrow it to cover weeds once we hire the strimmer from the allotment shop -

He then open his shed back up and gave us end of green plastic roll weed cover stuff brilliant and also offered to strim bottom end of plot on Friday great he is a helpful neighbour

Ginagibbs I will try that with the courgettes and melon, half plot ish bit less will be strimmed then still have pallet piles in middle of plot then half dug I hope and some area planted   -- pallet collars are brilliant and free extra brilliant I alway look at them on other plots

Sound like you're doing great, Gardengirl! image

I cut the climbing "dwarf" French beans by nearly half yesterday, they seem to have taken it in their stride.

I do need to apply the nematodes, but haven't had a chance.

The grass cutter people were going around the site today doing the edges, car parks and grass roads

  • Hi, can I ask all you allotment holders if it is against the rules to grow only flowers?

Maximum allowed per the contract is 25% flowers but there is at least one plot that is 100% roses but that gives me leverage/bargaining power with the council if I ever require it!
