  • Totally. I merely wondered as I'd have gone for a squiggle.

Much as I love the look of a wall, I worry about hedgehogs...

  • Walls are inpenetrable to them. Fences tend not to have foundations and so holes can be made beneath or cut through.

Perhaps there's a gate in the wall!

I like curves too, but my bed in front of a wall is straight.

Lupins can look good on their own. The photo is Great Dixter in June 2013.

  • That's quite beautiful. My lupins never did very well after the first year.

envious of your beautiful lupins Busy. I can do the pink ( red doesn't work) white and blue

had a good day splitting and planting about 150 snowdrops!

    Ooooh, beautiful Lupins Busy.

Dont worry Steve, the walled part is a small bit of the garden with a big wooden 5 bar gate to the left followed with open country side beyond and an open arch to the right. We often get hedgehogs - they can certainly move. We didn't realise how quick they can run!

Thanks for the planting tips Verdun. I'll have to look some of those up as my knowledge isn't nearly wide enough!

I'm with Steve on the curve here - and I'm a straightliner. Is that a word? It is now image

However - not a squiggle - a big strong curve. Would have to see the entire plot though.  The border would then echo the wall.

Would definitely leave parts of the wall unclothed. It's a huge and very attractive feature. The plants need to complement, not fight with it.

have we all completely confused you now Tootles?   image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
