GD  Our place is about 25km from Cooma, our nearest town, so a 50km return trip. We usually only go in once a week unless there is an appointment or something. You do get used to it though. We live on 100 acres of mostly bushland so we get to watch lots of wildlife. I have my own little Mazda which I've had since 1993. Suits me very well. I can drive Hubby's Toyota, but dont like the big thing so don't drive it except around the property.

since it's now gone midnight, I'm about to turn the light off. Catch you later.image

  • Our island is built up with shops just 5 minutes drive away and 5 - 11 yr. school just 10 - 15 mins walk - nothing is too far - beach almost 1 mile away, airport and harbour less than 30 mins drive. It's great to live on an island for so many reasons, but there are restrictions - no weekend away unless you hop on a boat or plane which means extra costs.  No boarding schools, and with some health problems you have to travel to Southampton or London.  There are no universities but more qualifications can now be achieved via distant learning.  I can't imagine the vastness of 100 acres but the wildlife must be amazing Pat E.

Thanks for your kind comments, lovely people  image

GD -  I love seeing your sea and sky pix. You're getting great value for money with your new camera!

As we're coming into autumn and winter weather, I was wondering if you get much snow where you are?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

One from the garden, and appropriately a shot of a Garden Spider with a rather large meal ahead of him/her.

  • What an amazing picture Sheps - the details is fantastic and such an interesting view.

Yes we are enjoying our new camera Fairy and as for snow - we don't get much - perhaps every 4 or 5 years an inch or two might fall, and once every 10 years we get a deep fall that closes roads, schools etc. We just aren't geared up for snow here so most things come to a standstill when it does fall in any quantity. The gulf stream warms the air and often Jersey have colder winters than us as they are nearer the continent.

Detail is superb Sheps. I often see spiders in and around the planting along my back fence.  Always reminds me of your spider pix!

I wondered if you got very little GD. We definitely don't get as much here as we used to get. Normal pattern was heavy, continual rain till the turn of the year, and then a lot of snow as it turned much colder. When I worked with horses ( I still work in the same place ) it was common to have to dig our way into the stables before we could open the doors and get the horses fed! Difficult keeping the entrance drive clear to allow people in for their lessons etc. We haven't had that pattern for a long time, although we still have a fair amount of snow most years.

  • There's something quite sad about seeing that pupa being attack, it's pretty helpless.  Weren't you tempted to flick the spider off it and help the little guy out, Sheps?

    Otherwise, a nice photo!

Thanks GD and Fairy, pleased you like it image

Hi Bob, it wasn't a pupa, it was a moth that had flown into the spiders web and subsequently been wrapped up.

Re the rescue attempt. I was a little too late, but then why deprive the spider of it's meal.

  • Wonderful picture Sheps - it's all in the detail and you certainly have captured this Hoverfly from the right angle.
