Only i degrees this morning but no frost as yet though it feels very cold.  Very pretty pink and blue sky in the sunshine though.  I suspect I will have my head buried in books and magazines today indoors well wrapped up.  If the cold threatens to get to me I will get out my vacuum and duster.  Housework is a great substitute for gardening as a body warmer.

I could not resist an hour in the garden, pulling out cleavers mostly.  No sign of the winter knocking back the weeds this year, except the bindweed which the birds are already raiding the dried stems for their nests.  A chaffinch sat and watched me from a branch of the big pear tree.  My pack has arrived in the post for the Great Birdwatch weekend on Jan, 30th and 31st.  Such lovely pictures and postcards they send with it so I have been having fun decorating my kitchen walls and the fridge door.  The snowdrops are doing well this year up the garden so I may be splitting up again in a few weeks as some of the clumps are huge.  The smell from them in the sunshine today was delightful.

Hello , no snow drops out yet hear

Often thought about doing the Great Birdwatch as I get a few different birds visitng the garden , the feeders being under a Hawthorn tree , so they have protection from the Sparrow Hawkes we get image

GWRS you dont have to have interesting birds, or indeed any birds,  visiting your garden to do the birdwatch. The more responses they get, the better picture they can get of the current situation. Even null responses are useful. Though it might be a more interesting experience for *you* if you get some interesting ones, of course.

Last year was very frustrating for me. I'd had quite a lot of different birds in the garden all week, but I certainly picked the wrong hour to do my birdwatch - just a couple of pigeons and a blackbird in the whole hour! I dutifully submitted it anyway. And the next day, the redwings and bluetits and dunnocks and so on were back - grrr!

It is bitterly cold in Bristol this morning with white grass and roofs.  Only 1 degree at present but the sky is blue and the sun is out.  Wheeliebin men have been but I will probably have to wait till the frost thaws at lunchtime to get the empty bins up the drive.  Thank goodness I have stout boots with good gripping soles.  The birds will be very hungry today so extra food will be called for and some warm water to de-ice their baths.

  • Good morning Marion,

We are also feeling very nippy here too at the moment we have it at 0°C and we are about to face the weekly food shop brrrrrrrr, hope it warms up a tad!

Glad you have your bin ready and waiting to be filled. Please take care on the ice!

You have reminded me to add more bird food to my s/ list, thankyou!

I keep meaning to try them on some cockatiel food ( it looks like it contains similar seeds), as I have unopened bags left since my beloved bird died a few months ago. They may enjoy a change!!

Have a good day ,stay safe and warm.

Morning Marion, it's -3 here, all our garden is white with frost but blue sky, just need some sun to melt it away, the side roads where icy last night very dangerous : (.

You sound like you have been busy in the garden Marion, what's the temperature there now?

Still 1 degree here flumpy.  Nothing thawing yet.  But it is good to see the sun and it is dry.  Flowers, I am sure the birds are glad of any type of bird seed.  The holly berries have not been devoured in my garden yet but all the cotoneaster bushes are being stripped and the fallen apples.  I replanted a tulip bulb something had dug up yesterday but this morning it was gone and a six inch hole left empty.  A squirrel no doubt with good sense of smell and digging skills.

Ho cheeky squirrel : ) hope the sun comes out for us both Marion because me and my hubby have got a run bag of stones to rake out onto the drive, that should warn us up : )
