Only two degrees when I got up this morning so soon put on the heating.  The new greenhouse heater is doing a good job in the conservatory.  i think I must shut the cold frame down this evening and put some insulation over it.  Forecast is for -2 on Saturday night so frost and ice on the way.  The offers from Secret Garden Club this week were irresistible again so 12 new to me perennials have been ordered.

Yes. GWRS I think I will have to forego my AGS meeting on Friday evening as it will be too cold.  My night vision is very poor so icy pavements would be a hazard.  It was only 2 degrees outside again this morning but 5 in the conservatory thanks to the greenhouse heater switching itself on.  Maximum forecast today is for a three hour spell of 5 in the afternoon.  I think I will pick out my summer flowering bulbs today to make me feel warmer.

  • Morning Marion,

just had a quick read back, hope you had your bin emptied by now!

Your book on Woodland Plants sounds interesting ,I would love to learn about and recognise more of the plants we often come across during some of our walks!

This is my first year of having a coldframe....what do you insulate it with,I have been thinking of using multiple layers of bubble wrap maybe?

    Have a good day Marion.

I insulated my coldframe last time I did it with an old duvet from one of the children;s beds!  It is in the garage somewhere so will look it out when we get maximum temperature today.  Bubble wrap anchored should be fine, flowers.

The green wheeliebin is still out on the pavement full up so it will stay there till Saturday when they are due to pick up both bins and recycling boxes.  I have been wallowing in last year's copies of "Which Gardening" mags which my friend saved for me.  Love their trials of new plants - they tell it as it is.

My 12 new to me perennials which i ordered on Tuesday have just arrived from Secret Gardening Club and they are superb big plants as usual with excellent root systems.  I will don my warmest clothes and boots and go out in the brilliant sunshine we now have, about three, to pot them up.  they are having a drink at present.  I had 3 of each of Hollyhock "the Bride", Papaver"Garden Gnome" mixed, Primula denticulata "Alba" and "Doronicum magnificum".

Hope you got your new plants potted up this afternoon Marion. They sound lovely. Looking forward to seeing some photos of them in the summer.

  • Thanks Marion.

    Your new plants sound good.

I did, Marygold.  My fingers were frozen even in gloves but it was lovely to feel the sun on my face for a bit.  I saw on the local news that the binmen in Bath are on strike and the council are asking the public to take their recycling to the depot themselves!  I hope it does not spread to Bristol.
