Primrose, I think Verdun's growing the only sort with some resistance to downy mildew. I don't think they've managed to breed a truly resistant variety yet.
Marc, I guess the big ones you're thinking of are New Guinea impatiens - big flowers and attractive leaves, too, and they make good houseplants. Not so reliable outdoors (around here in the north, anyway) though I don't think they get the mildew.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
I dont really like Euphorbia as well, I think there rather dull. I do like hanging baskets but not to many, I think some people go a little bit over the top sometimes.
Euphorbia? Really perki? I couldnt b without them! My ascot rainbow looks fab in the sunshine this morning! I bought epithymoides polychroma on verdun's recommendation last month, can't wait til it gets going properly, shooting well though. Isn't it funny what one person loves another hates, good thing though otherwise all our gardens would be the same!!
I'm another one in the can't stand euphorbia camp. It had been left to run wild and basically smother everything in my garden. Took me ages to get rid of it

Actually, I don't much like Busy Lizzies (sorry). Not keen on the stems and the exploding seed pods scare me a bit.
Hi guys are Busy-lizzie s safe to grow now (I would say impatience ?? but did not want to offend you Verdun
)
Verdun, funnily enough: the last HB I did was busy lizzies , about 25 years ago.
The problem I have with them, they're like "rockeries" for every cracker you see 100s which are totally naff.
