Today I have been at the allotment putting up the frame for my chicken run that was easy enough but the hardest bit was digging around the bottom to put some wire down underneath it. I'm suffering for it now
the entire site is too wet to do anything digging and prepping wise so I fear it will be a few weeks before I can do anything, which is a shame because there are couch grass roots all over the surface of the non-chicken bed. the soil is just too wet
Gosh Fruitcake the soil in our garden is frozen solid I'm not sure I'd get the shovel in! Well done on getting the wire down for your hens: hopefully it'll do the trick.
Have just come in from a lovely 4 hours (!) in the warm sunshine. Started off pruning a couple of shrubby little things that I think might be gooseberries - a bit prickly. Then decided to get rid of some ivy on our side of the neighbours fence then just carried on. Ivy has been working it's way up a tree in the corner so I cleared away as much as I could reach and left a foot or two at the bottom to apply some glysophate later. While I was excavating I found a hellebore that I didn't know was there, hidden under a pile of ivy. Glad I found it as it has buds on it just about to open.
Also saw my first yellow crocus out today too. Fab day! Feeling great now and about to have a nice cup of tea with my husband and enjoy looking at the results of my efforts
Ground frozen solid in the garden, much to early for me to Spring prune so did some greenhouse work. Does that count. Potted on dozens of fuchsia cutting from last sept/oct. Probably about 70. Potted a load of rose cuttings from a bunch I had for my birthday.
Pricked out Mullien banana and custard, seeds from the 'Seed Swap' thread, lovely little plants. Potted up rooted 'pinks'. Gave everthing a little water, thinking of sowing some sweet peas middle of the month.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Collected a barrowload of leaves from around the pots of things waiting to be planted. Admired the snowdrops and the growing number of aconites.
Wondered why February Gold is so called as it's only flowered in February once in the 15 or so years it's been out in the meadow.
2 sorts of daffs out. One is Rijnvelds Early Sensation, the other is very pale and fades even paler after a few days as a cut flower. I don't know what it is.
Not sure I like daffs this early, this is snowdrop time
Did a bit of tidying while checking for bulb shoots starting to appear. Found a lot of salvia patens pods with seeds still inside, so looking forward to sowing those - a lovely plant and very hardy for me.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
I'm not sure if it counts as gardening but since tomorrow is greenhouse arrival day, I have spent a little time placing some weed matting round the back of the concrete pad and covering it with shingle!
I have over-wintered S. patens Bob but I think I get flowers earlier when I start new from seed. I haven't grown it lately, maybe time I got some more.

They are Forester.
It's a large shredder, nearly as tall as me, otherwise I'd be worrying about being drawn in myself

Tomorrow I get to watch nice men and their erection...
Of the greenhouse/shed combo!
