I'm sorry to hear that Berghill, must be hard for you. You have such a big and beautiful garden.

We are in the same club Berghill, short doses of gardening followed by sitting until the pain goes and off again when able. I get days where I can't  tolerate sitting or standing for long, then I'm up and down like a yo yo cursing my back pain. I've just come down from upstairs where I'm building a frame to hang my propagator lights from, had to come sit down for a bit with a coffee.

Same here. Gemma.  I can do four hours work in the garden which is huge, per day but only if I split it up into bitesize pieces and I do not like being a couch potato in between while I recover so my laptop comes to my aid.  I am sure there are many more octogenarians who do the same.  The spirit may be willing but the flesh much weaker than it used to be.

Me too - bad back, arthritic joints, new feet still a bit weak and, given the weather, lots of times when I can't garden but I do like to keep up with this forum - joined the original Beeb one in 2003 or 4 - where I find plenty of good tips, have a bit of a laugh and offer advice when I can.

I've also made some good friends on here, met some and keep up with them by email as they've mostly moved on to other forums.

There's a good community feel here and a wide range of both characters and gardening styles, situations and experience so something for almost everyone.

I think you do amazingly well, Marion.

Back on again. Not my back now, but it is pitch black out there, blowing a gale and raining. Even I cannot find the whatever to go and garden in this. The wood burner is lit, the Central Heating boiler has been serviced, there is a Brunswick Stew on the cooker,so  I am resting on my laurels. (Never heard it called that before, but it is definitely being rested on!).

It's blowing a hoolie and chucking squally buckets today so I'm on admin and organising duties - annual ball on Saturday so lots to do.

Had to look up Brunswick Stew.  Hope it hits the spot and warms your laurels.

  • I'm new to this board, but I'm another who was on the old Beeb MB, I was just plain Buttercup then. I recognise some names of old virtual friends. I remember that day at Harlow Carr, little-ann, and the one at Trillian's too - good times.

Like some others, I have no-one to talk to about gardening, which is the thing that keeps me grounded (often literally!) and active and thus makes me a lot healthier and kinder on the public purse!   I only post when I think/hope that I might have something useful to offer; though I've been gardening  for a good few years, my current garden is a far cry from the average urban or suburban plot and demands a rather different approach. But I like to read the posts; young or old, there are always new things to learn. The best thing for me is being able to access all that personal experience of plants and projects. Right now I'm wondering whether a tyre planter would look out of place in my garden (probably, but they looked great) and trying to find a local source of free pallets to make some small raised beds on the terrace for veg, after reading about everyone else's creations.

  • Hi buttercup two very good and interesting days I still have some pictures on my computer image
