I'm amazed to see that you still have hebes in flower. I always lose them in winter, but it's been -8° here several times already. Rarely see gooseberries in France, or Rhubarb.

I think Flumpy and I must have the same taste in TV programmes!

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Thank you Marion image  will look  at those gooseberry cordons  Web sites.

Fruitcake, keep in touch on this image I read, Bob Flowerdew, that gooseberries prefer wood ashes and can be trained as you would an apple or pear espalier. Keeps the plant 'open' to air flow and helps with mildew problems. Hmm, mine have been pruned to be  an open bush so would need to look for a 'leader' stem. Will check it out and examine the bushes.

Lophomyrtus Magic Dragon needs to be protected from frost but would be lovely in a pot no doubt and could be overwintered indoors.  I am not buying anything new for the garden this year and do not know that any of my friends or the Bot, Garden has one where I could have a cutting from so will just have to put it on my wishlist.

Still only -1 outside at the moment and more frost around this morning so will delay the garden safari till lunchtime or so.  Sunshine is promised for most of the day.

  • Hi Marion,I actually have this shrub......it's been planted in a south facing bed which is well drained.......during the 5 years it seems to be very happy throughout the winter.....I can always take a cutting for you later on this year.

Oh then I hope the weather warms up from now on as I do not want your shrub to succumb, meadowland2!  TY very much.  Just let me know if you fancy anything in my garden I can propagate for you in return.

  • Many thanks for your kind offer........will research when it's appropriate to take the cutting and contact you just before.image
