My goodness we are promised 11degrees today and it is 9 already.  My friend's tiny Garden in the heart of Bristol which is very sheltered has delivered iris reticulata and a vase of roses which would indicate autumn if not summer.  I have some flower plants behaving like evergreens, notably antirrhinums and wallflowers.  Strange times to be a gardener.

My goodness our road looks smart.  We had the pavements tarred today.  They are quite dark at the moment while they dry and my chimonathes looks spectacular with the new black pavement at the foot of the wall it clambers over.  I have never seen it so covered in its red blossom as it is this year.  It was splendid gardening weather and i have filled the green wheeliebin ready to put it out tomorrow evening.  The tar should be dry by then.  More and more daffodils are opening now and crocuses too.  The blossom on the prunus should be opening soon.

  • I was there today, the smell of the tar is horrible image If I'd not been on the school run, I would have given you a knock image

The tar won't take long to dry, they did ours a few months ago and it was dry in a few hours. Wet tar akways makes me feel a bit mischievous and want to put my footprint in itimage

Marion thanks for your advice I will sow my seeds this weekend can't wait. I love your blue flowers what are they called Marion?

Iris reticulata, flumpy1.  They are bulbs you buy in July and plant in September.  Outside they need to be planted deeply if you want them to flower every year.

Very wet but very mild at present in Bristol.  11 degrees but set to tumble through the morning so, when it is dry in the afternoon it will be cold .  Such topsy turvy weather.

Gone noon and just drying up.  I will give it an hour or so before I venture out.

Sun shining brightly now so have put out the green wheeliebin filled to the brim with laurel cuttings from my neighbour's hedge and now i can see the snowdrops that were beneath it - Sam Arnot i think.  The sun has brought out all the smiling faces in my flowers,  Two perfect Cool Wave pansies and three red and yellow tulips - so early!

Lovely sunshine this morning and the wheeliebins will be emptied shortly which is my cue to fill the green one up again.  I can see more daffodils have opened up from the kitchen this morning.  When I start splitting the snowdrops at the weekend I will bring some down to plant in the slate scree.  They will show up nicely there from next year onwards.and i will see them from the kitchen and the conservatory.

It was already 9degrees when I tumbled out of bed this morning so a mild day and no wind at the moment .End of the second month of Bristol being Green capital of Europe and I have kept to my resolve to not buy anything for the garden that needs to be delivered and to get new plants only through propagating from my own stock, seeds or from friends.  Forsythia, cornus and black willow cuttings have gone in the ground , snowdrops being split to make another 3 or 4 hundred and big seed sowing session next week from freebies.  Potatoes will be chitted from the leftovers from my crop last year.My bungalow uses a lot of heat that is wasted through the one brick thick walls so I am investigating having external wall insulation as I need to keep warm because of my heart trouble.  Bristol Council is going all out to make the honour really count.
