I think Monty's programme is a breath of fresh air in the world of 'garden makeover shows'. He offer's them advice and expertise from his vast experience and even gets his hands dirty too. I think the budgets set are very realistic and sometimes a little optimistic as labour and materials cost a lot of money. You never see this on Alan Titchmarsh's Love Your Garden - which I can no longer watch. The labour alone on some of the gardens he and his team makeover would be eyewatering. Then factor in the - quite frankly - vulgar amounts of money on the numerous garden items they give to the garden owners and then on top of that the sheer volume of plants!!!

No, I will stick with Monty and the sensible idea of actually getting people to pay for what they want and do the work themselves. We all know how much you love your garden and take pride in it knowing it's all your own hardwork. The gardeners on Monty's programme will value this experience more than any £9k barbeque!!!!

Put me down for Monty anytime, it's good there is another gardening program to watch and the beauty of iplayer . If I didn't have already have a kindle  hd   I'd be buying one , just for the iPlayer alone..

Enjoyed this change and like tonight's gardens it shows that it's all real work   through the different stages ,and not a case of " this is one I made before"

I've only seen tonight's so far, with the nice rose loving widow and the enthusiastic chap with the big pond. OH recorded last night's prog as I was with daughter being a granny.

I think the same as Tootles (quotes aren't working) "I liked it. Anything that brings more gardening to the telly is good for me. I liked that it was real gardens and not elitist." Monty came over as being a kind gentle person.

Also I think people find it strange that they have to spend money on the garden, but they are happy to redecorate, put in a new kitchen and buy a 3 piece suite. A garden is also part of a home. (But I am aware that not everyone can afford that new kitchen etc.)

BL - I absolutely agree. Many people will spend thousands doing up a room in their house with new furnishings, paint , flooring etc - especially if it's a kitchen or bathroom-  but they think a few hundred quid will be enough to make a garden into a paradise!

Perhaps more people will realise that with a bit of hard work and a fairly modest sum, they can have something very attractive which suits their needs perfectly.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

My mother use to say that you appreciate something more if you work to get it.

these new gardens will be loved a lot longer than those produced by a team of people over three days.

a years hard work creates a bond, the triumphs and disasters will be remembered.

MD is the right person to host the programme  and does it very well.

  • There has been a lot of comment on the cost of these gardens, rightly so, and the programme makers seem to be promoting the opposite philosophy of the rest of us who garden on a budget, often shoestring in size. I blame the RHS and its Chelsea gardens. How long before we get the first million pound garden, being drooled over by TV pundits and celebrities.

The rest of us rely on bargains from the GC, propagating our own plants. swopping plants with friends and neighbours, pinching cuttingsimage, our own labour and efforts etc, etc. That's the real world of gardening. How about a gardening programme solely focused on gardening for free, or as near as dammit. That would be really useful.

    Enjoyed last nights episode image

Dont think we need to compare to other programmes and presenters and costs as all for different needs, lives, enjoyment etc

They are all good, let's just enjoy the fact we have a new series to enjoy and take inspiration/information from no matter how big or small image

And of course a drool over Monty who is looking FIT and healthy, excellent image

Good idea Woody re the new programme! Maybe we could do! You start! Attach film clip on new thread, we could limit the clips to 1 min each! What do you think? image

Monty's programmes are not the usual format of doing up a garden in 3 days. The garden owners do most of it from the design to the digging over a period of several months, so it's good to see the gardens evolving.
