I liked the description by one of the ladies of Monty working like a ferret.image

  • The most expensive plant bought for the medlookalike  garden costing £600 , had not been checked by asking Monty- as to whether  it was suitable..

    Why ?

I suggest most people , and especially  first timers would have asked.

But where would the smoke and mirrors come from then.?

Just watched this on catch up (forgot it was on last night). Quite enjoyed it just to watch Monty, if nothing else !!!image  Regarding costs, it does'nt surprise me that they spent so much, we just bought a bit of decking and some brackets to make a garden gate, cost a small fortune!!

gina - you're dead right. I think people are often very naive when it comes to the cost of things. Any hard landscaping is expensive - even if you're providing the labour yourself. If I'd had to pay a firm to do the fence and gates round the boundary of this garden, and the raised beds in the back, it would have cost in the region of three grand. It's not a huge plot either, but the raw materials are dear before you start to factor in labour or anything else. It's  probably cost me around £1000, and  a lot of blood, sweat and tears - before I did any planting.

I enjoyed the programme well enough - it's people's own ideas and they fund it themselves. It's all a learning curve, and they'll be proud of what they've achieved because they've done it themselves. If they had to do it again, they'd probably do some things differently -  I think we all do that.  Good luck to them I say.  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I agree with the majority of the above. Watched the show with interest & relieved to see that it was different from Alan's Makeover ones. Great to see how Monty advised, disagreed & got down to work himself!!! Think it would have been good to show plants' names on bottom of screen when they were being discussed like in Gardeners' World as it was too quick to catch some names & make note  of them.

As with many Gardening Programmes , there's always something new to learn. A breakdown of how money was spent would have been interesting as well.

I agree with Fairygirl. I've made some awesome mistakes, still do, but gardening is like life in general. We learn from mistakes. They've got a garden they like and can tweak it to their hearts content. So long as they 'enjoy' it, its worth it.

  • either way, i will most definately be watching tonight, happy to have more gardening on tellyimage

Have seen both programmes so far, and am LOVING it image.  So inspiring to see people doing things themselves (don't like the makeover programmes when an army of strangers come in and take over) - and great to see Monty rolling his sleeves up .... he comes across as such a genuine guy - not "star" like at all.

And loved both of tonights outcomes .....roses and wildlife ponds .....priceless (well ££££'s actually, but you know what I meanimage).
