I started this thread in 2012 and having taken the sound advice given, my Salix Flamingo is thriving, I took a picture this morning to show you but unfortunately I'm not able to upload it  - obviously doing something wrong!   Thanks as always for your help.

Another try at posting a photo - hope it works.  Had very little rain here so I give the tree a good soaking once a week and now need to give it a trim!  Thanks again

    Hi

I want to buy two salix flamingo to put in pots to stand outside our front door but after reading some of the other posts I'm not sure putting in a pot is a good idea. What sort of size should the pots be? Mine are about 38 cm wide. Are they too small? Also the front of my house is north facing and only gets the sun late in the day so is a salix flamingo the right plant for this spot? Many Thanks

  • I've got two salix flamingo, one this year is beautiful, cream/pink leaves, didn't give it much attention, the other is in the open, in the lawn, has hardly grown but looks ok with little green leaves so left water running at it's base for half an hour.. these trees are about 20 ft. apart, no obvious reason for difference in growth, it just seems to happen!  Our first salix was gorgeous, grew to 10! x 10!, and suddenly expired, hey ho, joys of gardening!

  • Hi

I have a salix integre Hakuro-nishiki in a container its been doing really well but noticed last night the yellow leaves look like they are dying off and dropping. I water it regularly and the green leaves dont look as bad. It was really hot on wed's as we all know Any Ideas please ??

    Hi

My salix integre hakuro-nishiki has been in container for a year and looks dead no leaves at all. After reading thread i wondered if it would come back if planted in garden. I have clay soil would this be ok?

  • we've grown both our present Salix in open ground, added good compost to root ball and altho' one is looking better than other it could be 'cos better one is in semi shade.. they do need water now & again especially in hot dry spell - & I mean WATER, LIKE SEVERAL CANS FULL or run hose under it for half hour or so.  Our first Salix grew to 10 ft x 10 ft a beautiful tree, but suddenly gave up on us.

  • I bought a standard Japanese Willow a couple of months ago. I re-potted it with good compost, topped off the soil/pot with shingle stones to help with watering etc. and it was doing really well and producing new shoots and leaves in abundance!!

Then I went on holiday for 2 weeks but asked a neighbour to water all my pots for me - she obviously didn't do it every day (if at all!) but i've come back to a very poorly tree. The leaves are dry and brown and starting to drop. My first thought was to cut it back and see if it re-shoots. Anyone got any helpful thoughts on saving this beautiful shrub......
