Some good tips on here but ive not yet seen anybody with the same problem as I have with my Flamingo, so now im worried.I planted mine 6 year ago in the corner of my garden (next to the house and a 6ft fence) its taken really well and is now about 7ft at its highest point.I cut it back regular and it looks pretty much as Verduns in the picture above. This year ive got a white stuff growing all over the trunk and branches altho its still nice in colour.I have got a few brown leaves so reading the above comments I will start watering more, ive never given it much water only when it was a youngster as ive been told they dont require much when they have taken. Is this white stuff some sort of Fungi that I can treat to get rid of without harming the tree?.Any help appreciated..
Hi Badder, I'm no expert on these, but anything planted in the lee of a house wall will need more frequent watering. The fence will also act as a barrier to weather - good for many reasons, but perhaps not in this case. It depends on which direction your rain comes in at of course, what kind of soil you have (is it quite water retentive?) and what other planting you have round about. Any other info you can give will help with advice others can give you, including the white on the trunk.
If you can post some pix that will be a bonus. Click on the little green tree icon in the toolbar above the posting window and follow the instructions
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
My plant looks like it's been taken over by a different type, looks nothing like it did in the past, I cannot seem to attach a pic on mobile, but basically this branched which are really tall, completely different type of leaf and the body of the Salix now looks dead? Anyone any advice, should I cut cut it back or forget about it
Fairygirl..ive had the Flamingo in the same place for the last 6 year and up until this year its been really healthy. We was going to move it this year from my back garden to my front, in which case it would have been away from any fence/building but after reading previous posts on here where peeps have moved them and nearly lost them I daren't.The soil soaks water up pretty quick. The white stuff almost looks like wet tissue (if that makes sense).Im going to have ago at posting a picture.
Verdun..I have just soaked the soil around the Flamingo, its had a good 5mins with the hose running in it.On closer inspection some of the branches are quite brittle and brown so like you I am convinced a good watering will help.

Knew you'd turn up soon to advise, Verd
I always think powdery mildew only affects foliage, so interesting to hear it can be on the trunk/branches of shrubs and plants too.

Thanks Fairygirl and Verdun.
