If anyone is out this way I'd recommend a visit...despite the rain it's a good day out if you like history and gardens. Very child friendly too, although we were on a child free day, plan to return with children in tow before they go back to school. Children under 16 go free and the play area is well out of the way if you don't have children. There's also an indoor and outdoor picnic area.
They are in the 2 for 1 entry guide and there's a discount for the gardens.
We didn't get to walk round the gardens due to the rain so no pics but had some lovely views of it from the Hall. There is a nice Food Hall and Gift Shop, both a tab bit expensive but good places to buy gifts. Good selection of books regarding gardening, preserves and cooking.
There is also a plant fair on 31st August which is free entry.
We visited a fabulous garden near York, called Breezy knees. Quite a new garden, they started planting the flowers in 2006 having planted trees and hedges first to protect it from the wind. The soil was sandy so dried out quickly so they have used weed preventing porous fabric topped with lots of bark chippings. It's worked very well.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Thank you Lyn. North Yorkshire is lovely, miles from you, but Devon is lovely too, we went there 2 years ago. The weather was good too. I see I didn't post any pics with lawn.

Beautiful Lizzie, I am really into long borders, you see why I need another one to match mine, they are always in twos.
Pleased you had a lovely holiday in York, I havent been there for years.

Dont mention lawn! Ours desparately needs cutting before the rain sets in and the ride on is knackered.
The small pond is now turning into a small lake! So much to do and hardly any spare time, dont you just love this gardening thing?
If we went to bed and got some sleep it might help.
I also love the planning and dreaming about next year. I look at bare earth and see flowers! You're right about bed though. Goodnight.
Night Lizzie xx
