We have just returned to France having been on holiday in the West of England. I put the photos of David Austin's rose garden on the rose thread, but I'll add some more here.
Hever Castle in Kent.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Mottisfont is near me so I go every year, especially when roses are at their best. Very good this year, and earlier. Lots of work going on to give more all year round interest as well.
We thought that Woody - it was fantastic to see that explosion of roses in June, but you would never do it in your own garden as there would only be one short season with anything to look at. However, lovely that someone else does it for us to enjoy - we don't have to look at it the rest of the year
Also most of their roses are the old fashioned types which have one marvellous but relatively short season. The scent is almost overpowering, and is boosted by underplanting with dianthus, which are equally heady.

WW, I think Great Dixter and Waterperry are my 2 favourites too.
Please feel free to come and see number 3 when you are next in town.
Yorkshire, end of July, visiting friends and Uncle. Perhaps Harlow Carr.
Lovely pics of Hever - particularly the one of the sky reflected in the lake
. Fascinating place, considering what happened to Anne Boleyn next
Visited Mottisfont at the weekend - loved it, but only managed 2 pics before the rain came down
