Zoomer I'm with you on trying to save freezer space. I have a dehydrating machine which gets lots of use here. It's so much easier to store things in jam jars, isn't it? Is it too late to grow your onions from seed over there. I've had good success with mine and have only recently planted mine out in the garden. I'm not sure if I'm too early or a bit late, but we are still getting very cold nights, so I don't thinks I've missed the boat. Time will tell, no doubt.
We've got friends in the valley with mature quince, crab apple and plum trees and they aren't into making jams, so they are happy to get rid of as much fruit as I like to take. My visitors and family are always happy to get access to jams and pickles. Lazy sods!
Gardengirl, you are an inspiration regarding uses for pallets.
I source pallets from a local business park when needed, it's mainly a storage park and each warehouse keeps their used pallets outside. I ask each time before I take. Most have two piles of pallets and they are happy for the broken one's to be taken. Sometimes the broken one's don't appear to be broken but I've taken them when the guy's are sat outside having a tea break and been helped to load up the car.
To cut to the chase - if you have a similar park near you - you'll find the supplier's to the warehouses use the same pallets.
Zoomer , perhaps a bit early for Garlic / winter onions , not seen any but not really looked yet , next month for me , although have got beds ready now
nice to have frogs , all we have is moles , rabbits & hares
going to do a new strawberry bed , existing one 2 yrs old , then will scrape it after nest year , hope that makes sense
problem with pallets is they don't fit in car
o/h has shallots ready for pickling , very good harvest this year
Pat - I don't grow enough stuff to justify the cost of a dehydrating machine, might consider a press though next year depending on how well my apple tree's do. There isn't a crop this year but they were only planted last October.
Two pear tree's look dead with no leaves but when the bark is scrapped it's sappy underneath the bark.
GWRS think I have bunnies which visit the plot as I keep finding random spuds dotted around the plot just on top of the soil. Dug all my spuds up, so unless the neighbouring plot holders are throwing them over the fence something else must be dropping them.
Found a dead mouse on the flag stones last time I visited the plot. It's still there, can't bring myself to move it. I'm ok with anything which crawls and isn't any bigger than a thumb nail but don't do mice
Dont mind mice Zoomer, I hate slugs and spiders There are a lot of cats that visit, so have not seen any mice, cats must be doing a good job!
Had a lovely afternoon at my plot on Wednesday.Had a good tidy up session, weeded and mowed the paths etc. Made 18 new strawberry plants from runners for my planned new bed for next year.
Italian Yellow bush beans have been a success with my OH, must remember them for next yr. Also got Haricots growing. My tiny apple tree is producing some fruit so should have a few apples. (scrumped some cookers from my next door neighbour at home for apple pie!!)
Still waiting for sweetcorn to be ready. Have a good Bank Holiday folks.
Morning everyone. I've been a bit out of action for four days with a gastro bug, but managed a light meal last night and all seems ok this morning.
just for info, I dry all sorts of things in my dryer, including the tops of celery which many others throw out. It comes in handy in winter for soups and stews when you need that flavour and don't have acces to fresh celery. Also all my herbs, including chives, parsley, thyme, etc. and of course, my main crop, tomatoes. The machines are not too expensive. It's earned its keep many times. Just saying.
