Hi everyone, not been on here for a couple if weeks, hope all is well with your allotments. I've read a few of the posts so here goes......
first of all Zoomer, so sorry to hear of your recent illness, hope you are making a good recovery. It's sounds as if you've really been through it, I hope you're managing to do some gardening of sorts, it will lift your spirits ????
Gardengirl, glad you got an offer of an allotment, did you decide whether to take it or not?
Stagbeetle, you seem to have got to grips with your allotment and it sounds as if you've done loads! Good news about the chicks lol.
GWRS, glad you had a nice time in Tenby, was the weather kind to you?
Gina, hope you enjoyed your day off..... Yes I'm hoping to have flowers too. Have planted gladioli and dahlias, neither of which I've grown before, have sown phlox, delphiniums, rudbeckia and asters but not much showing through yet in greenhouse (eek ! ) Didn't realise you were in Cheltenham, sis in law lives there, she took us to Dundry nursery? Think that's what it was called...earlier this year, to the potato weekend, they had loads of varieties to choose from. We're further down the M5 in South Glos, just off junc 14. Loved the pics you pOstend of your before and after. How are things going with your new polytunnel?
Hello Caral, hope you're getting on well with your plot.....keep us updated with your progress, it's great hearing what everyone is doing.
Lets hope the weather holds for us all this weekend! ????????????????????
Stagbeetle - I love strawberries, been growing them in the back garden for over 20yrs. You can't beat strawberries picked straight from the garden.
For a crop this year try to obtain plants from other plot holders.
When buying or establishing your own crop, the packs of six plants sound like a bargin but each plant will put out runners of new plants for next year, resulting in lots of plants of the same variety all producing strawberries at the same time, and in the long term, gluts.
Buying single plants of different varieties flowering at different times over the summer, although slightly more expensive, means a longer harvest and less chance of a glut. Read the labels when buying to find out when they crop. I'd suggest two plants of each of your choice. You should then have 4 - 6 plants from each plant for next year and a respectable patch which is producing strawberries over a number of months.
Early varieties or perpetual strawberries produce two crops each year, if the weather is on our side. They flower about June and again in September.
What ever you choose, at least 6 or more plants should produce a respectable number of plants for next year.
Hi Woo, welcome back, poly tunnel going great guns thanks, got lots growing in it, dont know what I would have done without it as my greenhouse house is full to bursting!! Heard about the Dundry Nursery potato weekend but did'nt go as I was working.
Bought a six pack of strawberry plants last year from one of the supermarkets, they were fantastic big tasty fruits so hope they do as well this year, they were cropping till October!! So easy to propagate too

First lot of maincroppers gone in today
i am trying the hill planting method to see what happens.
Still only one chook laying at the moment but she's done one every day this week
and three of the others are imminent
Lots of seedlings are filling both greenhouses, just waiting for them to be ok enough to be planted out.
New plot is starting to look good, but all the pics I have taken there in the last few weeks have all been chicken related lol
