Early potatoes planted at my established plot today, earlies going in at the other one tomorrow or Friday PSB picked and eaten today. Feeling very happy with myself at the mo
Went to my plot yesterday, sowed some peas in guttering in poly tunnel and some more broad beans. Had a bit of a dig on one of the beds, still very heavy clay despite all the horse muck I've put on, dont know if I will get a "fine tilth" this year!
Sowed my sweet peas in October and they have overwintered in the GH, they are now getting very big!
Big old fox showed up, he looked like a lion as his rear end had no hair from being so mangey. Wonder if we should call the RSPCA, fox mange is contagious to dogs (I know as mine had it and she was pretty poorly).
As I was leaving i noticed a massive clump of frogs spawn in the brook, hope we get lots of frogs
GG I had a phone call when my plot came up, from the plot warden and she met me to show me which ones were vacant. We are local council run, so I expect others may be different.
Stagbeetle, suggest you dig a trench for your Runner beans and fill it with cardboard and then as much garden waste as you can get, cover the soil back when you are ready to put the beans in. Interested to know if anyone does any different method
Ginagibbs I would phone the RSPCA , however , I suspected they won't be interested , if I am right , contact your local Wild Life trust who I have always found really helpful
Runner bean , your method is the traditional one practised on our A site , could sub shredded newspaper for carboroad because it is only me that likes runner beans I just use a wigwham of canes in an area that I manured last year plus some compost when I put the beans in
Been to the allotment and dug more of it so that was good buuuuuut im chitting my potatoes and they are looking mouldy! I'm worried im not going to have anything to grow on my plot. I haven't planted peas or runner beans but will do, pumpkin seeds have not taken at all in the little pots. How do I stop the compost getting too wet and mouldy? I only sprayed them once with water. so far I only have raspberry canes, toms and sweet peas for the plot, I'm going end up not meeting the 60% target of using the plot.
Dont panic Stagbeetle, I have nothing in the ground yet apart from fruit trees and bushes, onions and garlic from last year, this is true of nearly all the plots at my site.. Plants are good at catching up. I doubt if you will be judged on a 60% target except in high summer when most plots will be romping away. My neighbour who is Chinese buys plants from the supermarket and plants those on his plot!!not suggesting you resort to that though!!
Keep trying again with the seeds, if the soil is already damp when you sow, leave it a few days before watering and only water when its looking on the dry side. My broadbeans all have a green layer on top but are still growing well. Its all trial and error
I have broad beans, onions, leeks, garlic and fruits planted at one site, and potatoes went in two days ago. At the chicken site, I only have onions in but that will change once I have got the chickens because I will be there as much as possible just watching them
