Gg Our allotments are managed by Land charity on behalf of the council. So no problems with the council just our site is mismanaged I had assumed that rules will be followed and I would be given a plot when it came up-this wasn't the case at all!

My initial plot I got it straight away, I took half a plot and soon realized that it wasn't enough so put my name down for another half/quarter and was pretty flexible in my choice. 18 mths later nothing came up or so I was led to believe I just accepted it. Only when a plot became vacant next to me I found out that it had been offered to someone else! who had only been on the WL 2days. I was told by the new steward I was never on the list- boy was I angryimage so despite filling in forms and emailing the chair/committee getting updates I was never on the list, amazing! Making an complaint to the chair I was given the desired plot and an apology but it was an unpleasant exp through no fault of mine.

Despite all this its a great place with incredibly nice helpful generous gardeners and a lovely community feel- I love it.

I do not want to put you off with my exp I think its good to keep in touch with the council and allotmenteers at the site so may have a better idea how long the WL is. Good luck.

Weyplotter...I thought I was on a list for a plot on a site only a dozen steps from the back gate. Kept asking the chair of the committee if any were coming up, there are only about 10 and it would have been ideal. Over the course of about 3 years the plot holders at the top of the allotments changed nearly every year image

Thinking I was going to be 27 before a site was offered, put my name down on 3 or 4 different sites in December/Janauary 14. The lists were long so I was thinking might get offered one this year...2015...so there'd be heaps of time to think about how to tackle it...NOT...I went to view some plots a few weeks later and accepted one....and started this thread for support...

I was a tad bit disappointed at the time, when, after 3yrs I'd not been offered a plot on the site behind the house...so pleased I didn't get one now ...image...they don't have GH's, or polytunnels, sheds have to be tiny, there are no fruit tree's, little wildlife, few birds and butterfly's, no slow worms...

...every cloud has a silver lining, at least after all your efforts Weyplotter you have the plot next door...and we have an allotment thread...image

  • Gg  Officially I have a half and a quarter plot however my lovely eccentric neighbour has allowed me to turn his 10ft high compost heap into a bed in exchange for he can help himself to anything I grow. He visits the plot but never grows anything and retains it as it used to belong to his mum yrs ago.

I'm going to start growing mid feb. Beans garlic and onions are doing well in their beds.

Zoomer so glad you started this thread I've learnt so much from it. Glad that you're happy with your plot and I know you have worked so hard. Getting a plot seems so complicated and difficult when in reality we all know of empty plots on site. I don't understand why people take on a plot and do nothing? Is it a status symbol I wonder? perhaps its just my site that some people want to go 'organic' but don't realize the hard work involved and then loose interest.. if only they knew the number of people waiting to get one.

GWRS not grown mangetout myself but would be interested in how you do. Peas grew beautifully-still have some in the freezer yum so tasty.
