Hello all.Sorry it's taken this long to thank you all for your advice on my wireworm and potatoes.I think the previous tenant had a fish&chip shop. Opened three sections all have potatoes and wireworm. I was hoping to grow them . Got a couple of books they say potatoes are easy ,been new to this I'm looking for easy.Don't want to be discouraged to start off.

  • I noticed a bag and a crate of Albert Bartlett potatoes so they are starting to come into the garden centres

I go to a potato show end of January in Hampshire to get my spuds for the garden raised bed and grow bags, then I can by a few separate spuds of different varieties

If I get my allotment next year I might be heading to the garden centres to get spuds if they still have them

I've got a four shelved plastic grow house which I've had for yrs, wouldn't be without it. It's needed the cover replacing a couple of times and blew over one winter so is now only used in Spring for sowings, seedlings and plants potted up when the GH gets full.

Not so sure how versitile it would be as a cold frame, I'm happy to be wrong but thought cold frames need more insulation and are closer to the ground ie don't have shelves.

zoomer I have one of those plastic grow houses at home , very usefull , bricks fitted to base to stop it blowing across garden and on 2nd cover , 3rd waiting to be fitted in spring

use it for drying onion , harding off seeds etc etc , at present storing pots and trays in itimage

  • Hello Edd

The only ones I have had is that big gh and 4 or 5 tier grow houses which I had to weigh down with bricks stop it falling over in strong winds, but I understand what you mean not great having to look after lots of plants when you don't have the room

How about trying something like this with pallets and plastic - I saw this while going around a garden thought that was a good idea and took a picture, the small gh are worth the money even for a few year

Zoomer that is good you have potatoes, my main crop was all scabby so did not get much think it was all the topsoil I added to the raised bed made the soil have to much lime in it,  will be adding lots of compost to it

GWRS I took down an inherited plastic grow house frame on the plot, it's only about 2ft wide but it's a walk in one with shelves on either sideimage

It's in peices in the shed, that's going to be a job and half working out how it goes back together again, thought I'd be able to remember how to re-assemble it...wish I'd taken a photo now image

Gg - For several years I grew spuds in bags in the back garden using a 50/50 mix of multipurpose compost and home made compost, some varieties developed scab yet others didn't. Scab can be caused by too much moisture in the soil or compost and in bags or raised beds they do need watering to stop the compost from drying out so it can be a double edged sword, water too much and you risk scab or water too little and you have small spuds or none at all. .

I didn't water the one's on the plot after planting out but planted them on a bed of seaweed in the trench. Spuds love seaweed. Didn't have a problem with scab but had one or two soft spuds.

  • sounds interesting Zoomer was it fresh seaweed or pellets
