There wasn't a great deal of difference although the one's from B &Q did come in their own pots so could have been left in the pots to grow on a little. When I planted these out they were really bare rooted and had only recently been put in the pots because all the compost fell away from the root.
Not sure if this was a marketing ploy but if you wanted the bramley from B & Q you needed two other apples tree's to polinate it from group 4 and of course the other apple tree's they were selling were all group 4.
So unless you already have apple tree's from this group or neighbouring plots have them you need to buy two other apple tree's ... I've now got a mini orchard on the plot ...
Mini orchard that sounds good - Zoomer I have apple trees in the garden and they are great tasting just waiting for one to get big enough to produce apples and a peach tree that gave us 1 peach this year yummy though
I'm getting withdrawal symptoms from not being able to go to either allotment after work it's already dark when i leave for work and dark when I get home I have to wait until sunday before I can go to both of them and I'm not liking it!
I can't get to post pictures Gg, I've tried but never been successful.
Know the feeling Fruitcake. I can't get down to the allotment until Saturday. It's a working party day. We are putting in a seating area, cycle racks, doing a bit of tree cutting and having a bonfire. One of the tree's at the top of my plot is on the list so I'm hoping to get some straight branches for path edging.
Nice pics Gg , some of the plots on our allotments are really untidy and over grown, I really don't know how they get away with it.
Ive got withdrawal symptoms too! but luckily I've got a whole week off next week, skip coming on Friday so I will beable to clear a lot of rubbish out of the way, just hoping it doesn't rain.
I haven't got a Wilkos near me but think there may be one in Bristol so I might take a trip out and try to grab a bargain next week.
Good to hear you've got your new plot Fruitcake, it's going to be a busy day for you on Sunday!
Zoomer, hate to sound ignorant but how do you know which Apple tree variety is in which group? Sorry to sound so dumb!
Woo2 - I did some research on line, talked to other allotmenteers who grew fruit tree's on their plots and ordered fruit tree growers catalogues.
Pomana fruits Autumn cataloge is a good one to get, the prices are what you would expect to pay in a nursery or Garden Centre (all a tad bit expensive) but they sell a wide variety of fruit tree's and provide good advise, at the beginning of the sections on fruit tree's about different growing groups and which varieties fit into these different groups is noted when you read about the different varieties., so you don't need to purchase from them but gain knowledge about which tree's fit which group.
Allotmenteers told me fruit tree's would become unbelievably cheaper when the planting season window opened.
I also started a thread and asked other growers on GW how to pollinate a Bramley and which were the better varieties...
