I had a very odd feeling day. OH had left a tripod in Hinckley, so as he was going in that direction we went to Ryton gardens , or groworganic as it is called now. The cafe and shop has shut. The plant sales area has shut. The restaurant has reopened. We were the only people walking around the gardens. We saw one gardener and a couple making notes with a clipboard. The soft fruit area was padlocked, but peering through the locked gate, we could see loads of raspberries and gooseberries begging to be picked. The pear orchard was fenced off. I had the feeling we were there on the wrong day and we started whispering to each other. What was open was still maintained, but it seems to be going backwards not forwards. Very sad really.image

I started going to Ryton gardens when it first opened. I was working in Coventry and used to have lunches there.I was there when Prince Charles visited . I used to chat to Lawrence Hills and he took me to visit his wife Cherry. I saw it developed garden by garden. It expanded through the muck and magic era, demonstrating how to start an organic garden from a blank canvas. I think it has lost its way.image
