  • I dont think the bbc listen to us anyway. I dont want monty back why would I? i never learnt any useful garden info from him. I have watched Toby,Alys & Carol and got such a lot from them.
Why have the bbc done this? Did they do a mini survey of menopausal women who said they fancied monty? Dont they see that young gardeners need real advice? Even my Mum liked Toby but she would not watch Monty as she said he was not a good gardener.I did not know this site existed until someone told me last night so did they just ask the monty fans on here?
I had only just started watching GW but I will not bother if the best on offer is Monty.I hope they put Toby & Alys on something else as I would watch that.
  • Having watched Gardeners World for over 20 years now I've never felt so let down in all that time. To 'relieve' Toby of his duties now is nothing short of a travesty. Why? Geoff Hamilton took a couple of seasons to get into his stride and he became a Gardeners World treasure, I'm sure Toby would have done the same given a fair chance.
And on top of that to replace Alys just doesn't make sense!
Two young, knowledgable, talented gardeners tossed aside, and for what exactly?
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Monty personally although the timing of all this is questionable, backroom shenanigans?
I'm sure the details of how this change was brought about will come out later, lets hope Monty
  • Bit rude to suggest that Rachel De Thame is only on the show for her looks. She is a good gardener.
Why is everyone so bothered about who presents it? Like most telly it is a very mediocre way to learn about the subject and is always aimed at the lowest common denominator....
  • I am not sure that that is true.I learn about gardening from friends, books, magazines and from GW.
On television I could see what Toby meant when he demonstrated something and Alys too.I have not been gardening long. My sister and I share a garden and we have both learned a lot from Toby as new gardeners. We did not enjoy monty when he was on and did not bother to watch often. We both feel the same about him being put back - we will switch off.
ranger may feel that it is aimed at the lowest common denominator but new to the subject we needed a good basic grounding. We may well go on to do some courses later but we enjoyed Toby on GW and would like to see him back. A garden is a visual and ephemeral thing and as TV is a visual media we enjoyed seeing Greenacres as we could see ideas for our new garden. We just want more Greenacres with Toby please.
  • It was a bit negative of me Harriet. I just got a bit bored with the constant repetition of the basics. Haven't watched GW for a while but was surprised to read that Toby Buckland was being replaced with Monty Don. I think they both have good things to say.
I agree that TV could be a good way learn about gardening... but I am always so disappointed with it.
Happy gardening though. It is an amazing way to spend time :)
  • I am astounded that aunty beeb can do such a crazy thing. Why get rid of Toby? Don had his turn and he may be a nice bloke but he is not as good at gardening as Toby.
When we finish at our allotment we end up at our local (they are ok as long as we aren't clarted up)and at our New Year get together I heard the bad news. Most of the group felt it was a bad move. We dont all want to build mini exotic plots. I grow veg and flowers for the mrs. My mate grows nearly all cut flowers and the others have mixed plots. We all garden differant ways but we agreed that bringing back a bloke who is not that good was stupid. We did reckon it was just for his female fan club not for his skills. We shall stop down the allotment and down the pub instead of watching gw.
  • Great news, brilliant presenters, fantastic decision BBC - I'll be tuning in again!
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but why do we need to have four presenters when one would do.
  • We DO only need one presenter - the one who was doing it so well. Toby is a fantastic gardener and the BBC are making an absolute foul up by putting on monty instead.
  • This is the best news I have heard Monty Don Back on Gardeners World, It will be worth watching again. Well done to the BBC for seeing the problem and putting it right!
