What a delightful surprise in this dark days. I must say, all the gardeners in Gardeners world are keen gardeners, but Mont has something special, that I like very much. Take good care of yourself Monty and dont work too hard. Life is short and you have had a very severe warning. Have Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year. Greetings from Holland, Ansje van Elburg
I have an allotment and it is nice to hear some info on vegetable gardening but bringing Monty on, with his love of vegetables, is only going to limit the amount of interest to gardeners as a whole. Toby and Alys gave a good overall view of gardening as a whole and will be sorely missed.
I’m not happy about Toby going and I think it reflects the fact that the BBC has lost its way with how to present gardening on the TV. What exactly are we trying to achieve here? Toby came in with new and fresh ideas that took gardening back to its roots and gave a chance for new, younger home owners to make a start on their gardens – hence the blank canvas approach from the outset. I liked the original banter between the presenters, the cool wall and 30min fixes, but then it all changed and suddenly nobody seemed to be allowed to talk to anyone. If this is all about viewing figures then that is where the problem lies. Surely that change was a production decision and nothing to do with Toby, so why punish him? How is it that the BBC can produce something as entertaining as Autumn/Spring Watch and yet reject that approach when it comes to gardening? Don’t tell me it is a different audience because if the BBC is relying on the older generation to sustain the viewing figures it is only a short-term strategy that no doubt makes the production teams look good but will do nothing to attract a new generation to gardening. And the solution…..bring back Monty Don? Can anyone explain to me what Monty’s ‘Around the World in 80 gardens’ told us about gardening? Even he looked confused. Good luck to Toby and hopefully he will take is ideas, knowledge and obvious talent elsewhere and I for one will be following him there.
Still cant belive that the BBC has let Toby go, as a young viewer and new to gardening Toby has been brillent, its been my favorite programe but after watching around the world in 80 gardens with Monty i now know its going to be rubbish. Monty's to "snobey", so thanks alot BBC for wreacking my favorite programe, WON'T be wathing it again.
Firstly it would be GREAT if the old Gardeners World Theme could be restored - who likes this ponced up version of an old favourite?
Ideal line up for me would be Chris Beardshaw, Joe Swift, Bob Flowerdew and Pippa Greenwood. Monty ok but a bit other-wordly.
At least we will have no more gnomes or gimmicky features and non-funny "jokey" bits. Agree with comment above about Carol Klein - OTT style is very wearing. Also never learnt anything from Rachel - more a stylist perhaps?
Brilliant that Monty Don is now well enough to return to his job, but hopefully he won't over-do it.
Was this a sudden decision, or did the BBC know about this before the end of the last series?
What a pity they're not keeping Alys. I thought it was great to see what somebody can do with a very long, narrow suburban garden. She even had her own chickens, which not only help to reduce the number of unwanted bugs and produce fertiliser for the garden, but they also produce eggs for the kitchen!
I do hope Alys will be back!
Good luck with the next series of Gardeners' World
I do hope its return will be well advertised as I know that I, for one, will miss it if it isn't because I haven't bothered to watch it for a couple of years.
Hope everything goes well for the next, and all following, series.
That's great news, Monty coming back! He can explain very clearly, I am a great fan of the programma of GW as I am a Dutch gardener en we don't have programma's of this high quality! I am looking forward also to Joe, Carol and Rachel, hoping for Alys en Toby to do some specials?
Thank goodness for that! Pleased to hear monty is well enough to return. Shame to loose Alys. Love Rachel but perhaps she & Alys could share?! Stopped watching after giving Tony a fair chance, but will be watching every Friday in future.
Great News - Monty's coming back. I have been an avid viewer of GW since Geoff Hamilton's time, but since Toby took over could hardly be bothered to watch.
I'm sure Toby is a very nice person, but I think he is better suited to presenting children's programmes and as for his DIY projects, well a 5 year old could do better.
I hope we will see more of Carol and her plant propagation skills, she has a wonderful down to earth way of presenting and what about Joe and his allotment. I personally would love to see more veg veg veg!!! Statisics show that over the past two years more and more people are growing their own veg.
Sorry but cannot see the point of bringing Rachel back and as for Alys, well I think she was off with the fairy's most of the time.
Please can we have hour long GW programmes ALL the time.
