  • Afternoon everyone,  the rain was  hammering  on the windows at 2am this morning,  so we are having a slow start to the day. There's the odd glimmer of sun in between the showers.
Yesterday was splendid we were in town at a restaurant called Petrus, it's one of Gordon Ramsay's empire.  American cousins hubby insisted on treating us all , we would have understood if they had just taken SD and SIL,  but hey it was lovely.  We had a 5 course tasting menu.  Afterwards  cousin and some of the younger ones went home we took him  and older son on tube to see tower of London and the bridge,  then to a cocktail bar on 9th floor of a building near where SIL works,. There was a terrace so we could point out some of the other iconic buildings in the area.

Goodness me! it was sunshine a few minutes ago so I thought I'd have a quick walk round the front garden looking for more snowdrops. There was then an almighty clap of thunder as I put my wellies on and got all togged up, went to unlock the back door and a huge hailstorm struck with absolutely biblical floods of rain! Only lasted about ten minutes but gosh, the amount of rain was just stupendous. Gutters are cascading all round the house, although they were the biggest, square ones we could get, they just can't cope with that amount of water.

What a treat @Allotment Boy, glad you enjoyed the evening out.

    Good afternoon

we were supposed to go on a short walk with friends but the rain and wind didn't let us. Planning a quiet night, fireworks noise will start around 11 but usually is over by half past midnight. When young I used to like the buzz of St Sylvester, now I think of the poor birds who will be so scared.

Wherever I look 2024 is going to be a worrisome year for the world.

Peace to you, your families and friends.

All OK here, despite the weather forecast. The next village has had a lot of trees down, and a bit of mayhem, but no one hurt thankfully. Very glad we had planned a day at home, so no need to brave the roads.
I’m doing a mini Christmas dinner today ( by mini, I mean all the trimmings but only enough for two). I bought two turkey crowns, and we ate the bigger one with the visitors on Christmas and Boxing Day. The smaller one was cut in half and frozen, and I am using one half today. Really looking forward to it. All the fun with none of the performance anxiety.
Hope you are getting the pain under control, @punkdoc? TV in the bedroom is a good idea. A steady diet of Columbo and Murder She Wrote is amazingly mind numbing!
Rain has started again, and a bit of movement in the tree tops. Our house and garden are relatively sheltered in a mini valley, hope everyone else is coping Ok.

Good afternoon and a Happy New Year 2024 from New Zealand!

Every year I raise a glass at midday to my country as it is midnight and the phone inevitably rings!!

Rather windy and not to cold today.  Dismal and grey.

Wouldn't it be nice to say "Peace on Earth" but that seems to be so far away now.  We cannot say anything or do anything that may offend.  Nobody laughs anymore.  But, we can enjoy what life is left for us in a positive way.   Good food.  Good company.  Good times.

Enjoy your evening whatever you are doing wherever you are.

I'm afraid we ripped the alarm off the ceiling @Lizzie27 when that happened to us and we couldn't bear the tortuous beeping.  There seemed to be no way into the device to check the batteries.  We didn't replace that alarm when we redecorated.

Lazy day today - cold windy and wet outside.  Glad we no longer feel obliged to stay up until midnight.  Since that horrid cough and cold a few weeks ago I feel tired all the time.  It wasn't covid so I don't know why I feel so fatigued these days.

Here's to a happier, healthier new year for all of us!

@didyw .That's our next step if the new battery doesn't do the job. On our alarm, OH can unscrew (with difficulty) the cover and renew the battery, which is just a back up really if the mains goes down. Supposed to replace battery every 3-4 months according to the instructions which we've never done.
We have a second identical alarm in the kitchen which has never been a problem.

We're having a lazy day as well, weather is foul so just as well. I'm not surprised you still feel so fatigued after such a bad cold you had, it does take time to recover energy levels and you had been incredibly busy these last 6 months or so. Time to ease up a bit perhaps.

We've got one rib of a forerib for tomorrow. Managed to walk this morning without getting soaked - just a bit damp - which could have been much worse.

That's been the theme of this holiday, really. I'm only just beginning to feel better having had a cough for a fortnight, which has meant I've been a bit meh all over Christmas. The weather's been generally pants but we haven't had too many days when we got soaked. TVs been very average but we've managed to find a few films to watch and I'll probably rewatch 'Saving Mr Banks' that's on this afternoon, because it makes me laugh. Nobody died, which is better than last year. So overall, although it won't be one to remember particularly, it could have been worse.

Hope you all have a pleasant evening - see you in 2024  :)

@Allotment Boy that sounds like a most enjoyable meal and I'm sure he and his son appreciated the evening tour and the cocktails.

That sounds like a storm of biblical proportions @Lizzie27 albeit a short one. Hope you are well on the way to full recovery now after your health problems. Do take care.

Glad to hear that you are safe and sound @Ergates, hope those in the neighbouring villages didn't suffer too much damage. Your mini Christmas dinner sounds just the ticket in my opinion, enjoy.

I sympathise with those suffering from smoke alarmitis, awful things when they go wrong. When ours started peeping daughter scrambled up to the rafters to remove the battery to buy a new one, but alarm still peeped without the battery. Found out that it was also connected to an electrical supply, so off up into the mezzanine level to switch it off. Silence at last! We have another one in the kitchen area (again full height to the roof room) which goes off every time we open the rayburn to empty its ash tray. Rush to the door with the tray and back in again to replace and slam rayburn doors shut. Then have to open doors and windows to cool things down enough to shut the damm thing up!

Sending my very Best Wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year to all you wonderful folk (and your families) on here.
