    Good afternoonĀ

It’s a very cold day again. We woke up to a very thin film of snow on the ground this morning. It’s still visible in the shady parts but has melted away where the sun has caught it.

We did our SM shop and butchers visit today then thawed out with a coffee when we got back home. Will be hunkering down for the rest of the day, no plans to venture out any more.

You’ll feel quite a difference on your return home @Hostafan1, if you’re due back in the next few days. This cold snap is with us until and including the weekend and then is supposed to slowly warm up, but we’ll see. Happy birthday for tomorrow, too.

Regarding the tarmac, @Lizzie27, I think it will depend upon how cold it is as to whether they can put it down or not. šŸ¤žthat the temp rises enough for it to go ahead.

Yes, sad about Shane MacGowan. I’ve also read today that Alastair Darling and Henry Kissinger have also died. Henry Kissinger was 100.

Shocked to hear about Alastair Darling. He was only 70. I liked him and thought he was a good politician.

Enjoyed the walk to the dentist which did me good. First time I've been able to walk that far for nearly 6 months. Didn't enjoy the wallet grab by the hygienist for 20 mins work!

The workmen have finished laying the hardcore level and have tamped it down nicely and have also spread a bag of new gravel over the old stuff by the big garage which had got a bit churned up. They told me that hot tarmac would be laid about middayĀ  tomorrow when hopefully it will be a bit milder. I can't work out how they are going to get boiling hot tarmac to the top of the drive as it's quite steep and too narrow for a lorry. Should be interesting!

The broken down lorry was rescued so I was able to get out and do the weekly shop. It took some time as I rarely shop on my own so I had a good look round. OH likes shopping so he always comes too. Not up to it today.

I haven't started my Christmas cards. It's chilly in the dining room. Maybe tomorrow, but I'll move to the breakfast room.

    @Lizzie27.

@Hostafan1 has chosen a good time to be away in warmer climes. Bitter out there.

    Evening folks.

Freezing again tonight so the covers are on the car windows to minimise faffing about in the cold in the morning.Ā

Made a stew yesterday so easy supper tonight - always feels like a win.Ā

    Hope everyone is doing ok.

    I’ll say it…

Happy Birthday for tomorrow, @Hostafan1. Enjoy the sun, the hotel gardens look beautiful.
  • Good evening everyone,Ā  haven't posted much recently not much to say. IĀ  have been a bit preoccupied with this health trial and blood sugar monitor.Ā  Some stuff I knew some interesting.Ā  Awaiting results of samples sent away.Ā
Bit of luck at Capel yesterday, a big stack of coppiced Hazel, head gardener said help yourself so I did. 20 very nice bean sticks plus some thicker pieces, I might try growing my pumpkins and squash up a frame made from them a la MD.Ā
Bit of a panic at plots today,Ā  one of the standpipes had broken away from it'sĀ  tap. There was water gushing everywhere.Ā  The water should have been off from the beginning of the month. IĀ  got the key but couldn't find the cover plate to access the valve in the road outside. A couple of calls directed me to the spot, covered in leaves and litter, IĀ  would never have found it on my own. All off now and system drained, the ctte will be getting a very curt email .Ā

Forgot to mention earlier that I had had an email from the UK Biobank, asking me to complete a survey on 'Visulisation and Memory'. Crikes! but I thought I should have a go. Very strange and of course because we don't watch many films or TV programmes I didn't do very well in the 'do you recognise these celebrities?' section. Thought Clinton was actually John Kennedy. Oops.

I was really pleased today to read that the UK Biobank has sequenced the genomes of all the half a million people originally recruited which will have a tremendous effect on
disease research. I'm very proud to be part of the project.

@Allotment Boy, The blood sugar results will be interesting.

Envy you the hazel poles, we try to get our own from our hazel tree/shrub in our front hedge but can't take too many each year.

It was lucky for the allotments that you managed to solve the problem re the stand pipe, good on you.

I prefer shopping on my own @Busy-Lizzie, OH really doesn't do shopping at all so I rarely get the chance just to browse on my own.
