No, not as far as I know Dove. They’re often around our river, which is our eastern boundary, but as far as we are concerned they’re everywhere. I hadn’t heard they were protected. 😳
Another rainy day and apparently for another 3 weeks. It's beginning to get me down. I also find myself questioning a lot of stuff mainly what I am doing here. Apart OH, no family and very few friends all with second homes who disappear for weeks on end.
There's a chocolat croissant in the kitchen. I will show no mercy.
Storm Domingos hit us last night, howling gale and a few mini power cuts, but 145000 people are without electricity in Dordogne and it was worse on the coast. I must check my plants in the pots in the open barn.
The fireworks in our village in Norfolk have been cancelled because of the wet but they will be at the end of November instead so good for us as we'll be there then.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
A sunny morning here, but I’m sure it’s pretty soggy underfoot, will do house things instead today. Heard lots of fireworks last night, very loud and went on for ages, it would be too much to hope that there won’t be a repeat performance tonight. I haven’t seen any reports on how Tar Barrels in Ottery St Mary went last night, but it was due to go ahead despite the aim. I’ve only been once, that was scary enough. Poor @coccinella, maybe it’s just that time of year? I’m increasingly thinking that it would be so good to live nearer family. OH and I seem to be joined at the hip, a few friends locally, but hours away from the children, and my family, and OH just has one brother left who lives in Scandinavia. I’m confident I’d manage alone, I’m a good organiser and quite gregarious, but I’d worry about OH. Hope the chocolate croissant hit the spot! I made pancakes!
We have a sunny day with a howling gale @Busy-Lizzie no mention of it in the weather forecasts. I have just pegged out some washing with great difficulty, whether it will still be there at the end of the day remains to be seen!
Morning all, well, we did wake up (late) to sunshine but clouds are now building up. The garden's too soggy with all the rain we had yesterday so not sure what I'll do today, more clearing out I expect.
I think it's sensible @Ergates and @coccinella to plan ahead and make sure you move to somewhere within walking distance of shops, GP's, public transport and possibly adult children if possible. Rural life is all very well but it's not good when you can't drive any more and there are no facilities nearby.
The good news here is that the worst affected parts of the worst affected towns now have water levels of around 30cm, which is a big improvement. A dry November would be most helpful. I've heard dates concerning when all the damaged bridges will reopen of between 2 months and 2 years. I suspect everyone is hoping for the former date rather than the latter.
@coccinella Is there a local gardening society which you could join? They would hopefully meet up regularly for tea/coffee and might well organise trips to beautiful gardens in your locality. Just a thought.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

@coccinella, have you always lived in Luxembourg?
@floralies, hope the washing stays on the line and dries well. I don't bother during the winter months - too lazy probably!
We were pleasantly surprised at the fairly quiet firework free evening so am hoping tonight will be the same.
