@Perki, I have Souvenir du Dr Jamain. It's a gorgeous colour and scent but prone to disease. I sprayed it several times, fed it and watered it but it still got black spot and looked a bit mouldy.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
I found the same with Jamain @Perki . It was lovely in May and June and a blackened, crispy mess by July. The scent is extraordinary. It needed more TLC that I could give it - most people who keep it probably spray it.
I didn't realise that Mary Delany used to called be Mortimer Sackler. I believe is is quite a wafty rose, which might be good for a pergola.
I don't use the front door so the side / back door is my main door I walk through that archway multiple times a day, I couldn't cope with a blackspot ridden unhealthy rose on full show they is a public footpath there also.
Think I will go with Mary delany its top of my list . I can see a DA releasing a new climbing rose at Chelsea just to spite me making me spend more pennys .
Have had a job done on part of my garden- mostly hard landscaping to allow a greenhouse and little patio. The designer also planted up one bed for me- this is why I provided the Malvern Hills.
They’ve planted the MH only 4-6 inches out from the wall they’ll grow up. I feel like that might be too close? Also a little nervous that one isn’t deep enough.
@Marlorena we’re the same- I’ve got an Olivia that’s started back to full growth and I haven’t had time to prune it yet, and my Lady Of Shallott no sooner had I stripped and pruned it started growing like mad immediately.
It is a little close for a rose of that type, however I've planted them as close as that to fences but it's not ideal. I would plant it about 1 foot out from the wall. It's not too late to move it. @ciaranmcgrenera
@Alfie_ Very different growing habits. I would prefer Mary D for most purposes. Nice to see the Clematis out so early, lovely scent on it as I recall.
I'm very pleased with my work today.. a job done in 5 minutes, and a nice new obelisk around 5 feet tall. I take 3 x 2 mtr tall green metal spikes and hammer into ground about 30cm. bend stakes to the centre and tie at the top. Cheap too, they don't cost much.
I shall plant in the middle, probably a clematis rather than a rose, but a short climbing rose would be nice. I shall insert an extra, shorter cane in the middle at planting. I might also sow a climbing french bean.
hello everyone, I have started finally with some pruning today , although in the pouring rain today. Pruned the roses of the front border and one GdF. Next week the large climbers are scheduled if it is better weather and not too windy .
In the winter I have also replaced one Guirlande rose with Cymbeline 😊.
I have shovel pruned framboise folle and replaced with love song.
Moved the scentimental next to Baron G, to a more shadier position since it got fried by the afternoon sun.
I still need to plant one bare root in the front border .
