Sorry if this is a silly question but are we supposed to be cutting new growth off of our roses? as a few of mine have it. Is it because it is too early and the leaves will get damaged in the cold weather? tia

I'm glad you and your Mum are on the mend @Nollie.

In my garden in Dordogne the cold and wet had killed of any remaining flowers a while ago and nothing was sprouting. I didn't manage to plant all my new roses before coming to OH's cottage in south Norfolk last night. They are heeled in in the vegetable garden and will have to wait until I go back to France mid-March.

I haven't yet seen my Norfolk roses. It was dark last night when we arrived here. It looks cold out there.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

That is a beautiful golden rose, @olyia, can I ask what it is? Do you often have roses in bloom in January?
This rose is an unknown £3 bargain from B&Q (it was reduced due to its label being lost). It’s really not that great of a rose… it didn’t manage to produce more than two stems in tree years and this is its second flush. I don’t know why I still didn’t get rid of it. I guess, it doesn’t take much space or effort to look after, so I just let it be.

I didn’t have any roses in flower last winter. I guess it’s been quite mild autumn/winter until now.

@Meomye I just still need to prune my roses, hence some of the new growth will go as I prune. If a rose was already pruned, I’d just leave it. But I am no expert!

WS 2000.. one of them is an imposter.. hopefully not both... :|

Don't bother cutting them off @Meomye if they get damaged then new ones will come through..

Thank you @Oliya, it is gorgeous! Some roses can be like that I suppose. What a welcome sight though. Any rose that habitually blooms before April is a bit special, I think.

Does anybody know what maximum size can The Lark Ascending reach if I do minimal pruning and let it do its own thing in my "wild" garden? And I guess more importantly will it perform well with minimal interference from me? Thank you!
