That's interesting, Nollie, in case we get another heatwave. I am trying some black plastic ones with handles this year.

  • @WAMS that's the type I've just bought from B and M.

I have lots of roses in 50cm black plastic planters in a fully paved front garden. In the summer, they might need some additional watering, but they are okay. Only issue is that the planters each take in 70+ litres of growing medium, so buy compost in bulk bag.

And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)

  • Hi @WAMS, those look to be better quality plastic than mine but at £4 each I'm not complaining. Lovely looking rose - will you let it flower? My the Country Parson container grown from DA planted in October developed lots of buds but DA advised me to remove them.

DA doubtless know better, but I decided to leave it on just in case (some roses were still flowering at the start of Dec here last year) but I doubt it'll come to anything- getting a bit chilly now and all my other Delbards have shut up shop. I don't have the Country Parson, but some of my DAs are still blooming very well- Lady of Shalott, Evelyn, PAoK and Winchester Cathedral.
  • I did wish that I hadn't removed them, but hopefully it is building up strength for next year.

  • Quick question if I may. I pruned my tatty looking DA shrub roses in October, after de-potting and planting them between late June and late August. They have new young leaf growth now. Should I still prune them again in February, or is that likely to be unnecessary please?  Thanks.

Bargain @kate.james58, glad you managed to nab some!

I have seen other UK forum members warn about it but yeah, you probably only need to take care re the black pot/full sun/fried root thing in a heatwave.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
  • Thanks @Nollie if we get a heatwave I will try to move them into the shade. Probably kill myself doing it but at least the roses will be ok! i am in the North West - no heatwaves here this year.
