@Eustace, I had not heard of defoliating until last year. May I ask, is this the time to do it or did you start now because you have so many to get through? I, like you, still have roses in bud but am happy to get on with the job. Many thanks.
One comfort: I know Eustace's list must be far, far worse.😁
You never know . Well, I'm planning a massive cull/giveaway this year during my winter pruning. I have promised to fill my son's garden with roses when he moves next year! and I have to make space for new arrivals.
@Meomye I learnt about defoliating from @Marlorena's post here in this forum. I am just helping the roses which have already started shedding their leaves; I will hold off on defoliating the roses with buds as of now.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@Eustace thank you for your reply, I will get started, as you say, some have started shedding and are the leaves are very yellow. This is where I also heard of defoliating, it makes sense but I would never have known about is without the help of the very experienced people on this forum. Thanks everyone!
When I bought my house in Dordogne, France (downsized) there were 4 roses, now I think there are 31. I had around 70 at my old house. I have put 9 more in my basket with Lens roses.
OH's cottage in Norfolk had 7 roses, mostly climbers. I have added 10 and replaced one.
My daughter lives in France, near Poitiers. There were a few roses when they bought the house a few years ago. Recently I counted 112. She has just asked me for 5 more for Christmas. She has outbuildings, trees and a long fence so room for climbers.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
This is an indoor rose that I bought from Sainsbury's in October. it had lots of blooms and buds when bought but none of the buds opened - they just shrivelled. I trimmed it a bit and gave it some liquid seaweed feed and now it has new buds - I'm rather happy. But I'm posting it mainly to practise adding images. And including this my total is 7.
