@clematisdorset Yes all those dark canes are dead and should be removed. However I cannot see any green growth on that rose so it's possible that the whole rose has died. If mine, I would be digging that up and discarding, and getting something new..
There appears to be a lot of bulbs planted around it, are those daffodils or some other stuff, I can't tell. It's not a great idea to have bulbs and plantings too close to rose roots..
@kate.james58 I'm pleased you have a new book, but I can't recall recommending this one at any time, so I'm not sure where I posted that. In fact, I've not heard of the book and had to look it up, unless it's got lost in my ramblings about roses back in the day.. if so, sorry about that, perhaps somebody recommended it to me..
It's not been in my collection at all. I think it's from an American perspective isn't it.
Thank you @Marlorena, I agree, I cannot see any green growth on the rose. I will prepare to dig it up. I will cut the canes first, to be sure, but from what you say, I think it is a gonner.
Yes, I have daffodil bulbs in that bed, oops - too crowded maybe. Thanks so much for your help again @Marlorena and Happy New Year to you! 🌹

Spend a damp, wet, but enjoyable morning taking a Dorothy Perkins and spiralling her canes, to see what happens when she flowers.
I had cut her down to the ground last year and so all the new canes were very pliable and so when she flowers this year, we will see what happens. I'll try to get picture when the light is better.
I then moved on to one of the Dr Van Fleets. No spirals for him - he is being trained horizontally across the tops of the windows of our summerhouse. Be nice if he breaks his blooms along it so I get a garland of flowers above and cascading over the windows.
BTW @Marlorena, I seem to remember you mentioning on the Summer thread about a fertiliser that you used to help get thicker canes coming through. I hope I remembered that correctly and if I have what was the preparation? I have another climber (facing North) that is struggling a bit and only putting out spindly canes (maybe it's the aspect, but I'd like to help it along).
@PeterAberdeen Ok, I use several different ones, so I can't recall which in particular but for your location I would use a high potash fertilizer like Toprose [NPK 5-6-12].. this will strengthen canes and flowering shoots, but any rose fertilizer will do.
I also use Maxicrop Plant Growth Stimulant, liquid root drench, this might be the one I mentioned..
My main fertilizer is Vitax Azalea due to my alkaline conditions. It's the old David Austin rose fertilizer preparation, derived from organic based poultry manure..

Always of interest though..
It was a very old thread, and perhaps it was someone else who recommended it.
It was @edhelka who recommended it, so thank you edhelka, and sorry Marlorena.

it was Maxicrop. I’ll probably do both and fingers crossed
