Good morning all. Trip into Birmingham was a success. The back to back houses have been lovingly restored by the National Trust and were fascinating. They are near the Chinese part of town so we had a delicious lunch first. Hard to imagine how people used to live and not even so very long ago but what a sense of community there was.people were so strong then, they had no choice I suppose. My own Dad grew up in such a house and never complained about his childhood.

    Morning all,

It's crackin' flags at the moment. I've a feeling that it might not be by the time I start hacking this afternoon ;)

    Morning all.

I'm glad you enjoyed your Birmingham trip @debs64. It must have been hard going to an outside loo in the night in winter. People seemed to have more community spirit in the old days. I think I had more freedom as a child than children do now and my Mum rarely locked the door. We didn't live in a back to back house, the loo was indoors and it had a decent garden, but friends just used to drop in. Nowadays there seems to be more crime, children kidnapped, people stabbed etc and the country is so much more crowded than it was when I was young.

I didn't sleep well. My bedroom was 30° as midnight and outside was 32°. There were storms throughout the night, was woken by thunder. But, hurray, it's a lot cooler this morning.

Son 2's photo album should be delivered today and the chimney sweep is coming this afternoon for the wood burning oven.

It will be a sociable weekend. Son's birthday party with all my children is tomorrow and there is a bring and share lunch after church on Sunday.

Oh dear @Biglad, I'm probably being a bit thick, but what is "crackin' flags" and what are you hacking?

Sorry @Busy-Lizzie - just my northern vernacular, I think ;)

Crackin' flags is a reference to the sun beating down so hard that it seems it could crack flagstones. I'll be hacking a golf ball (again!).

In the meantime, I will take advantage this morning and finish painting a trellis that I started weeks ago!

Morning all. Nice and sunny at the moment but slightly cooler, thank goodness. Hair cut this afternoon, not a moment too soon. Off to visit mum next week and will see brother and start making some plans between us.
Debs, glad you enjoyed the trip out, your grandad was probably quite happy with " his normal".
Busy, too too hot for me, pleased to hear its slightly cooler this morning. Hope the album comes today🤞and hope, you all have a wonderful birthday weekend together. Should be
    quite a  party. 🙂

Hazel my OH cuts my hair when he feels well enough . I don’t like going to the hairdressers .
Over the years I have had some disastrous haircuts .

    Morning all,
a bit cooler today, but still dry and brightish.
Well, we got the acer roots out of the ground (mostly - still some to get out). I was sad to see it go, but we couldn’t risk a repeat performance in a few years time. It had pushed roots through all the side holes of the large pot it was in and sent them into the ground, around the large slab it had been sitting on. Quite some way in, too.😲. It couldn’t be left as it was too close to the house. It’s surprising how much light is coming in now.
We’re going to clear the area, and I’m toying with the idea of buying a small, very scented standard “tree” rose to go in a pot on raised wheels to stop any future mishaps. Open to other suggestions, though, but nothing too big.
    Off to the hairdresser now.

I NEED mine done. My OH cut my hair during the pandemic. While it was not a disaster, it was good to get back to the professional. However, I saved money, and that always helps. Means I spent more on my castle prints and postcards instead.
