    Hello @star gaze lily, just popping in to say that if it is box blight, the thinking is that you shouldn't replant with box for at least 6 years, but as far as l'm aware anything else should be fine. If in any doubt you could always replace the soil in that area.

    It's quite possible that it may be box caterpillars in which case you have nothing to worry about soil wise. Could you post a photo?

    So sorry, where are my manners. Good morning Rezzers  :)

    Some lovely Snoopy cartoons @Ladybird4 . Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

    @AnniD thank you.
    I don't want to replace it with another box, was thinking of either a Potentilla or just a few little plants.
    Did read about the waiting of 6 years, but there's not much information about planting anything else or the treatment of the soil. 🤷‍♀️
    It's gone very suddenly, over a matter of days. Have heard there's  a bad case of box caterpillars about at the moment.

    I was trawling through my photos and some family history .I found this print of my great great great grandmothers pub. The ROSE AND CROWN ,Rose and Crown yard ,Briggate Leeds .I was delighted when I first came across it in the city archives. It was a coaching inn and had a very interesting history .If I have shown you this before which I may have done please put it down to my bad memory .

    Caterpillars @star gaze lily. If you zoom in to the top right hand side of the first photo, you can see one of the little blighters.

    Morning all. Feels very warm but haven't been outside yet. I trimmed down some Monarda yesterday and now have seven pots of babies ready for next year. They do so sprawl their roots out and away from the main plant and then push up the new shoots everywhere.

    @star gaze lily, it is still very early days for you and you will have up and down days/weeks .Please try and keep moving forward with yourself and give yourself time and kindness. It's not easy for you at all and I can feel for you. ( my brother, just this week, has had a bad prognosis for a health issue which has come out of nowhere. ) These events knock the stuffing out of you, don't they?

    Rubee, how fantastic to find that photo of your relative. Wonder what her life would have been like?

    Morning @AnniD , nice to see you. I can remember reading your posts about all the trouble you had with your box hedge, nightmare.

    Morning all. Looking forward to watching the match later this morning. As you all know I like my gin and wine but will definitely be sticking to tea or coffee at that time of the day!

    Rubee - what a disappointing visit for your OH and, as you said, what a waste of time, money and resources - all for want of some basic admin / organisation. Don't really know what else to say. It must be incredibly draining and quite traumatic for you both.

    @star gaze lily - yes I removed a long parterre-type dwarf box hedge which suffered regularly with box blight. After it was found by the box moth / caterpillar it was clearly time to call it a day. No regrets at all.

    I did retain 5 large box balls and a couple of much smaller hedges which had not succumbed to either, but they have both been attacked by the caterpillar this year (seems to be a bad year for it). The damage isn't too bad and I keep them tightly trimmed which removes a lot of the affected foliage each time. I also try to remove the webbing in the hope of pulling out any caterpillars. Will see what happens next year.

    After removing the hedge a couple of autumns ago I immediately improved the soil with bags of well rotted farmyard manure (box is a hungry plant and the soil was quite depleted). A few weeks later I planted 5 strategically placed bare root yews which will eventually be trimmed into pyramids to give the sort of formal, year round structure offered by box. I planted up the rest of the edges with a repeating mix of hardy geraniums and alchemilla. They have all thrived so no ill effects from re-planting in that soil soon after removal.

    Hope that helps. Enjoy your day with the family🙂
