I normally grow Hunter, but this year I only grew sweetmax. Most of mine are Bell shape as in the one on the centre line of your pic @scroggin, but I had at least one that was more like the one in the foreground (ie straight up and down) I generally find you get more flesh than seeds with all butternut, as opposed to pumpkins.
@philippasmith2, @Allotment Boy, I don't think the shape is variety dependent, as previously I've had different shapes when only growing one variety. At the pre pollinated stage all the fruit had a pronounced bell shape. Looking at the DT BROWN catalogue the pictures show Walnut having a more pronounced bell shape than Sweetmax, but @Allotment Boy grew Sweetmax and they were nearly all bell shaped . One of the happy vagaries of gardening 😊
This morning (thankfully before the heavens opened again) we did our home vendange and picked the white outdoor grapes for wine. We managed to stay outdoors and strip the grapes off the stems ready to be "mashed". No feet involved! Got inside just before the rain came down. We now have the makings of 6 demijons. A great harvest and we also ate some of them as we were working. Very sweet so hopefully a good wine upcoming.
Picked the last of the pea beans. So many! Will use some of the "beans" for next years sowing, pickle some more and the green pods will be blanched and in the freezer.
Picked today. I have removed a blighted stem from a tomato plant. Anyway it is the end of the season, so not too worried. We've had a good blight free season this year. 🙂
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
